Just thought i'd let you know how my Saturday morning went when taking the Chimaera into a well known Tyre Bay in Marske by Sea (Tesside) for new tyres.

I had pre ordered the new boots (Toyo Proxes) agreed the price and arranged to bring the car in either on Friday & or Sat, all of which was not a problem.

On arriving @ the TB Sat morn I had to wait about 15 mins for a lift to become available, still not a problem, once the car was on the lift the job of fitting the new tyres was given to the fitter previously known to me (good I thought we'll have no probs here.

Front wheel off TF started to strip old tyre off,(just be careful with those wheel please)"not a problem mate nice cars those TVR's" was the reply.
Big sigh of relief from Gunny !!

The tyre was proving a bit of a bugger to remove - swapped to another machine to try to break the beads on back side of wheel, off with the tyre & on close inspection of bare wheel scratches / marks on the face new marks I may add.
I said be careful, look you've marked the wheel exlaimed Gunny!!!
"Dont be F***ing stupid you idiot I dont mark alloys" was the reply from TF! Gunny very angry, 'Manager called whom Gunny knows very well' "customer always right" especially when pound notes are involved, marks identified on the wheel as new, TF gets a stern word or 2 from me & Manager & goes very red.
Discount agreed for marks on the wheel & Manager removes TF from my job.
New tyres found on rack - Oh dear the supplier has sent 16" should be 15" more apoligies grovel grovel, Gunny very un-impressed, old tyre back on wheel (more marks ?? more discount offered) maybe??

In conclusion, have now decided to pick up tyres next Sat & take (with wheels) to Romax & have them all refurbished using some of money for fitting / balance & disount offered.

Lesson learned here I think , although same TF put 4 tyres on my SAAB 93 last year & did a sterling job. Oh well never mind, I have just about calmed down now.

I will only use C&S Tyres in Middlesbrough as they take care in what they do and they are the cheapest by far of good quality tyres, especially Toyo's. You say you bought proxes, but are these T1-R or R888?

Me too. Great outfit and very careful with the alloys. They are also cheaper than the afore mentioned Marske Tyre Monkey establishment. Ring Mark Campbell at C&S Tyres 01642 245339 and tell him your best quote, he'll beat it and do a better job.

What is the differance between T1-R & R888

T1-R is the direct descendant of the T1-S. A standard soft wall grippy directional tyre that the TVR community feel is a good fit with the TVR chassis for road use. The R888 is a hard sidewall track tyre with enough tread to qualify as a road tyre (road legal track tyre). The hard walls make the car more susceptible to bump steer and tramming, OK for motorway and smooth roads but could be an issue if you like country driving. They need to be warmed up before the compound gets grippy. They are made with reduced tread depth because tread flexing generates too much heat. They therefore don't last as long as normal Toyo's. I'm sure people will argue for R888's but I don't see where the benefit is over T1-R's on the road.

T1-R's are cheaper too. I use both, R888's for track and summer use and T1-R's for when I have to use the car in winter.

Bit far for you Teeside boys perhaps, but i've always used EDMAR who are just off the roundabout on the main road who's name / designation escapes me, on the way to Shafto's between spennymoor and bishop aukland.
Always had great service there having been let down elsewhere, and despite the 10 mile journey i always go there.
Never come close to damaging a wheel, and when i've bust a wheel in the past they were really good at helping me getting it sorted, including not charging me to take the tyre off and refit it when it wasn't fixed properly first time round by some cowboy outfit down south.

Plus the banter's always good with Eddie, great bloke.

Well spotted bob hehe

I did explain it in another thread, despite having used it for years, it was getting tedious having people asking what on earth it was, where it came from, and do i have an inability to spell a 5 lettered fruit hehe Plus it looks rubbish
