On a drive from Durham to South Shields today along the A194 (it may have another name for you townies, forgive my woollybacked ignorance) I noticed that the petrol station on the same side as the Lakeside has had it's wonderful 1960s circular canopies removed and replaced with the usual biscuit-tin lid. Such a shame, I always thought that cried out to be listed, but there seems to be a deliberate blind-spot with the artsy types who'll happily slap a grade 1 on some hideous pile of concrete shite but ignore historic car culture.
I don't know about anyone else but I get a bit nostalgic for the "old" sights of Tyne and Wear, you know the sort of stuff you have to watch an old episode of the Likely Lads for. It seems like our recent past is being cast aside these days, like the oh-so municipal sign that used to greet you entering Gateshead from the South A1. Anyone else feel the same or am I spiralling into middle age??
