I need a website setting up - without going into too much detail, sort of an online shop but with a directory for links to other services.

For example, an online shop selling baked beans, but with a directory of links where you can find places selling eggs and bacon (subject to a small advertising charge of course).

I'd want a plain, simple site - no flash graphics or introduction screens, just honest little photo's of stuff for sale.

Obviously, I could have posted this in the Computers and stuff forums, but I like the idea of using someone local who I can do face-to-face business with.

What sort of price would I be looking at - offers open to both professional and amatuer.

Ooo, this would be "trade"

The problem with websites is that they range from stupidly cheap to stupidly expensive. Those at the cheaper end of the scale never know what to charge for a site and often end up cobbling something together to "make it work" and not have too much outlay (i.e. they underestimated the time needed). Those at the more expensive end are charging a more realistic fee in terms of their outlay, but this is usually hideoulsy expensive for induviduals but you end up with a far superiour service (if you go to a decent firm).

For example, Amaro got their website from www.media-fusion.co.uk and it was rumoured they paid > £4k for it. First off I will defend media-fusion as I had an interview t'other day and the work they do is first class & I have a lot of respect for the team there. Having said that, www.Amaro.co.uk is a very simple site and £4k is a lot of money...

If you want, contact me as my bread-and-butter is writing web-applications (as an example, the last site I wrote was a full employee/payroll system which tracked distributions, performance, hours worked...). I'm sure I can sort you out, or point you to someone who can!

I had a look at that Amaro website and that's exactly what I don't want. Fancy links that move when you hover the mouse over them and stuff like that is all way over the top in my book. I just want something plain and simple, white background with a header displaying the company name and the links. Then a list of stuff for sale and if you want to buy it, a button to press to add it to a basket.

I'd be quite happy to pay the sort of money you mentioned if I got what I wanted with the support for changing odds and ends as and when required.

On a different subject, how do you get your site to the top of the list in google searches?

To get your listing on the first page you usually have to pay them.. a lot.. it goes by keywords, and clicks, and a load of other bullshit, Byff you could do your own website in half a day using dreamweaver its a peice of pi$$

I do have a copy of dreamweaver as it happens. I did my own website with it:

Byff.btinternet.co.uk

I think you'll find that is the reason I want a decent website It took a lot of trail and error and error and more error before it worked and at the end, I was pulling my hair out.

Now I remember why I have no hair

Bit late on this one, if your other offers fall through I'm here, I've done a few e-commerce websites in the past (PM me for a URL, as it's a little rude to post on an open forum ) Selling anything from OEM documentation to the engineering community, all the way through to "adult novelty items"

Cost would be very reasonable compared to 4K
