The newer ones?

Never had any first hand experience, but there is a yellow one in the area and for about 2 years I'd pass him on the way to work every morning without fail so his was pretty reliable. Unless of course he spent every weekend fixing it for the following week's commute...

Isuzu engine or something isn't it?

Yes the later models.. Me and Mrs Couger are over what to get, it looks as though an E46 M3 is on the cards for the daily hack, and a cheap 2 seater for the summer along the lines of Lotus Elan, Porsche 944, TVR Wedge, something around the 5k'ish mark..

As far as Loti go its pretty reliable, although look for wishbone rust, common problem.

They come in two flavours S1 and S2

S1 was produced from late '89 early '90 until about '93 when production stopped. All but a very small handful (less than 100 of the total S1 production) were the "SE Turbo" with a 160BHP Isuzu lump. There are loads of examples around with 90-100K on the clock which is good news.

The S2 was basically the same mechanically, apart from the addition of a cat which means 150BHP and a slightly revised interior and different wheels. When Proton bought Lotus they discovered enough parts to build 800 further Elans so set about it from '94-'95/96

Tuning possibilities to about 200BHP reliably and 300BHP is required.

Lots of info on the web too.
