I know I have been quiet on here recently but due to a few personal issues (lack of a job, but now sorted) I'm back!

Unfortunatly my new job means that I no longer have the requirement for a company car so it has to be handed back in one week.

This means that I need a day2day car as the Elise isn't practical for what I do, in short its going to be put up for sale. It will be in the classifieds soon, but NE members if you want to get in early, make me an offer!

What I would like the members to do is possibly point me in the direction of a new car - one with a bit of oomph would be good.

I have max £17k to spend, has to be able to seat 4 people (2 adults and 2 kids) cover all of the usual bases for me, ie. fast, handle well, reliable, etc.....

TIA - Paul

Cerb might be a bit small in the back, it really is a 2+2!

Been looking at Audi S3's & S4's as they are real practical day2day cars but i'm open to all suggestions.

BMW 330 sport - for that sort of money you should be able to get a 2-3 year old car with reasonable mileage. If it is fuly loaded it would have been close to £34k new.

Either that or a Scooby, there are some car supermarkets advertising new cars for about £17k, and a quick factory chip upgarde puts it to 260bhp. Saying that I think you'll find it a bit dull to drive after an Elise.

The 330 sport would be good, but they are common as muck, reliable, probably good fun to drive though. They have a reputation locally as a small time dealers car! Scooby is out only for one reason, the guy at work has one and he gets at best around the doors, 17MPG!!!! that has to be near Italian sports car MPG's!

330 is a cracking car. I had one with a load of AC Schnitzer kit on it before I had the M3.

Skyline?

£1900??? Who's that with? Look on the Skyline owners club and you will find some cracking insurance deals.

Elephant.co.uk

would like a skyline but if they go wrong it could possibly cost a fortune. Do I sound like i'm being defeatest?

I wouldn't normally look at a CTR but with a s/c bolted on and with ~290BHP its gonna move rapidly.

Agree about the Scooby, that would put me off too. That and the fact that I don't really like forced induction.

Personally am not bothered about how common a car is, I reckon the 330 will be ideal for my purposes as a daily driver, and it will be my next car. Nearly bought a 28k mile June '03 car last week for £16.8k, manual 330 sport fully loaded (£34k new!!) with warranty until June '06 ..... actually, I'm really regretting not buying it now....humbug.

It depends what sort of Skyline you are going for. If you get a newish R34 GTT (280bhp), and just stage 1 modify it will be very reliable. You would get a mint R33 GTR for the sort of money you are looking at.

When you have 17k to spend there is so much out there!

Have you looked at Mercs? You might be able to get a CLK 500 or AMG for that price.

AMG's are cool, understated and bombproof, my old man has a CLK320 and it has never missed a beat, ok its only 18 month old but his old E class (6yo when he sold it) only ever had one problem, the MAF and it was only £200 to put right.

Anyway - the search continues.

www.torque-imports.co.uk/

These guys have an excellent reputation when it comes to Skylines and Jap imports.

Some very nice cars, with very understated mods.

nice website, some nice Skylines too. I have the feeling that you want me join the Skyline club of South Tyneside !!

I'm beginning to think that this decision process is going to be long and hard, possibly the most difficult of my driving career, trying to replace the Elise feeling is going to be almost impossible, especially at its current spec.

That Civic is on Ebay now AFAIK - I will take a peek later to see what price it goes for.

Have a look at the Integra Type R's on that website. A lot nicer then the Civc's and really different.

£943 for me to be insured on one, bit steep. Looking at £600 for a supercharged Honda CTR with ~290BHP and loads of goodies like LSD, race clutch etc.

That would knack a M3 EVO!

Yes the M3 Evo is an old dear now in her zimmer frame, but still great fun I had a bit of a daft carry on with one of those Civic type R's in my Esprit and it was quite immpressive up to 3 digits.... couldnt get past me but was very nippy, once I got onto the dual carrigeway it was history..
