Discussion on another thread that Shafto's is well located with a good carpark but the staff are a joke and the food is getting worse every time we go.

From the other thread.....
Bowburn Hall & Pittington Manor are possible suggestions
Are these any good? We need to decide quickly, it's this Thursday.

Just looked at the Bowburn hall website www.bowburnhallhotel.co.uk

it looks nice enough, just spitting distance from Shafto's and has a big enough carpark for our needs, if i get time tomorrow I will have a deco and report back, no promises though.

Three pubs spring to mind, 5 minutes from Shaftos, just off the A167 on the A688 opposite Black and Deckers is the Thinford Inn, further down the A688 is the Poachers Pocket at Metal Bridge and I think The Old Mill is at Thursdale. Not been to any of these in a long time, but they all were and I stress were ok, ie. I do not accept any liability!!

Actually I was at the Poachers Pocket a couple of weeks ago - food was pretty decent.

It's also 5 mins from my gaff so it gets the thumbs up from me

Please suggest places but we need to know if they pass the test.

Is it in the general vicinity of Spennymoor?

Is it out of town?

Is the carpark a decent size?

How is the food, price & quality?

Not too busy?

What's that big place called on the A177 near the top of the hill passing Fishburn?

Poachers Pocket

Is it in the general vicinity of Spennymoor? Yes

Is it out of town? Yes but near houses, so TVR boys will have to light on the right foot

How is the food, price & quality? Food is good, think it was about £6 for my steak & ale pie.

Not too busy? Only on Friday nights and weekends iirc

Poachers Pocket

We went there on a wednesday night once and could'nt get a table, they told us you have to book every night and the car park is poor for our gang, the Thinford further up the road sounds a better bet, not sure about the food though, and its on a very busy roundabout, so maybe not.. ummmm

There's very little 'shop'. We simply spend the night chatting, drinking and eating.

That sounds good but does not help with the venue. Do you all go in your tvrs.

The Poachers Car Park is better than Thinford Inns car park which is smaller and just gravel iirc.

When I went to the Poachers we didn't need to book and was fairly quiet

Actually, the Thinford pub car park is a decent size, and tarmac, but I've only been there daytime, so don't know if the local chavs get up there of an evening.
Not a bad sort of place though.
Traffic will be ok that time of day.

For peace of mind (hooligans not running over your car bonnets), Shaftos takes a lot of beating.

There is always the Park Hotel on the Spenny side of Bishop Auckland,(A688 Coundon). Good parking, classy, and outside town.

No this is PH not TVRCC. We're all petrolheads but there's a fair diversity of cars, TVR's Loti, Noble, Ferrari, etc., etc.

Can't find this one on the web. Sounds OK though. Does anyone know their web site or contact details?
