Sometime in the next couple of weeks I've got to go to James Cook hospital.

They are going to inject me with a radioactive liquid and then four hours later take a blood sample.

I can do what ever I want in the four hours so I though I'd take the wife and have a nice lunch.

So any recommendations for good food near-ish to hospital.

Thanks in advance.

I work at James Cook (if it's radioactive iodine, I work with some of the staff who administer it). There's obviously food on site but it's about as good as you'd expect hehe There is at least a Costa though.

If you're looking for other places outside the hospital there's a few options. Directly opposite the hospital is a Toby Carvery (not sure I'd call it good food, but it's convenient at least), other places I would recommend would be Jolsha (Indian restaurant about 5 minutes drive from the hospital, but I'm not sure what times that's open). Would also recommend the Bay Horse in Great Broughton but if you go there you may want to call in advance as they fill up pretty quickly. I went there a couple of weeks ago and the food was fantastic.

You could try places like Yarm too (Santoro is a pretty nice Italian restaurant, but again I'm not sure what the opening times/availability are like).

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes I thought I'd give the hospital food a miss!

I'll have a look at the Bay Horse and Sontoro.

Any suggestion for a hotel with a quiet lounge/bar that does good food?

Muse in Yarm, consistently excellent. Booking essential. c.20 mins from James Cook

Muse is big brother restaurant to Cena (top quality pasta/ pista and a few mains)

Both way better than Santoro

Park on the high st or west st just 5 mins walk away

The Kings Head, Newton under Roseberry is fairly good. Not too expensive, fairly quiet and food usually good.

Many thanks to all who have suggested places, it is much appreciated.

I'll try to reply with where we eat and a quick review but I might not remember, old age and illness!

I was at James Cook yesterday but lunch didn't quite go to plan.

Decided to go to the Kings Head, just wrote down the post code rather than the complete address. Either I put the post code in wrong or the sat nav mucked up but we didn't find it.

So put the post code in for the Bay Horse. After about 20 minutes the wife was getting worried that we were getting too far away from the hospital (the 4 hour is gap is time critical) so we decided to head back and go to the Toby.

Well what an eye opener that was! It seemed that the carvery customers were having a competition as to who could pile as much food onto their plates as possible and then shoveling into their mouths as fast as possible! Just by the look of it I'm sure the hospital food would be better quality.

We ended up in the hospital Costa, wish we'd gone there to start with!

That's a shame. The Toby would be the last place I would try - I have only been in once (when visiting JCH too) and I took one look and left the place. Not for me.
