What's Sunderland really like?
Discussion
Boss walked in an hour ago and told me I'd be working off-site next week up in Sunderland for a client (systems integration / 1 week).
My co-workers were chuckling between themselves while he was talking to me and then left for lunch.
One of them just watsapp'd me this:

Never been to Sunderland before, any do's and dont's? - also what do they mean by 'blue drink' up there?

I'd rather spend a week there than some other places in the UK but you do see some unusual characters and it is like going back a few years in time. The coastline is nice but the town is dated. You could maybe compare it with Blackpool.
If you are able to drive then stay nearer Newcastle or Gateshead for a finer selection of restaurants, hotels and people! 8-10 miles away with reasonable roads for rush hour commuting.
