Stay away from Newcastle 12/13th
Discussion
It's the labour party conference and they are taking over the Sage Music Centre in Gateshead, however I have it on good authority that several riotous groups are expected in Newcastle and as such the Police are gearing up to control the crowds. They have been training very hard on the horses and the like, plus they now have 2 JetSkis to patrol the river.
Apparently Fathers4Justice, ProHunt, AntiHunt and some random thugs (they have a name which I forget) are all expected and while as violence is expected it's more a worry of the sheer amount of people who will be in and around town during next weekend (12/13th Feb 2005).
Unfortunately for some, we have lectures & cinema trips to think about

Are you talking about that horrendous giant silver slug thing ?
Is there an architectural equivalent of dyslexia ?
St James is generaly at the top of the town, and while as it brings lots of people it is contained and in one area. The suggestion here is that there will be riots / protests across the town, although I wouldn't be surprised if they try to keep them all to Grey Monument type area due to teh size and distance away from the Sage Music Centre...
The roads on the Gateshead side of the Quayside are mostly closed from the Friday the 11th. I think thats great if you live south side of the river and work on the Quayside
Newcastle are away to Fulham on the Sunday of that weekend so no match crowds!
PS They had to have it in Newcastle because they could not find a decent buliding in Sunderland

Got sent an email about this the other day some extracts (its long)
An area will be created around the Hilton and Sage with barries/fencing. Police security searches will take place.
Police will be using extra powers for stop and search operations on people and vehicles.
An outer zone will include some road closures and lane restriction on the Tyne Bridge with checkpoints on approaches to the bridge.
More checkpoints on South side of the river
Public transport should be okay but pedestrian access to the Tyne bridge, High level and Swing bridge may be restricted.
Redheugh and Millenium to be unaffected.
Police presence to build up from Mon 7th and expect them to be all gone by 17th.
Expect DELAYS
Oh joy - probably not a good idea to be driving a cerby past all those trigger happy cops they might mistake overrun for gunfire

nice!
A few mates where down there on Thursday night having a drink and decided to take a few pictures of themselves on the quayside (their old school friends all came to Newcastle to meet my mates). Anyway upon lying on the floor in a 5 pointed star to take a picture against a light police turned up and did background checks on them all

cue "Dead Ringers"
Brian Sewell:
"When one arrives at Gateshead, what might one expect?"
Receptionist:
"Lots of people from Gateshead"
Brian Sewell:
"Will I not find a landscape populated by cave dwellers and woolly mammoths?
Receptionist:
"No. That's Sunderland"
Even the top end of the town was full this morning, it normally takes me around 40mins from my house to where I park and my route takes me through the top of town (down St. Mary's place), it was so busy this morn 1.5hours later I was still in traffic, and I take routes which avoid most traffic.
Oh, and I had the roof down and it started to snow.
On the Swing Bridge at 9ish this morning a truck could not get through the barriers that had been put up during the night as they are not wide enough!
Took me an hour to get in from Boldon!
Saying that though the High Level Bridge being closed and the other work on the Quayside has made it a nightmare getting into Newcatle
