I'm going to need a car trailer for next weekend as I'm picking up a rusty Alfa from Arbroath.

I have no idea of cost etc so if anyone give me an idea what I'll be paying, has experience or can recommend someone I would be hugely appreciative!

Alternatively how much it would cost for a man with a transporter to bring it back... Its about 4 hours there and back.

Hi you could try "Back to the Classics" in Blackhill. They are on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/pages/BACK-TO-THE-CLASSIC...

Good reputation and helpful .. no connection etc.

There is a company with a branch in Darlington who will hire out a car transporter. It'll be more expensive than a trailer hire, but unless you have a hefty tow-car already, it may be the easier option given the distances involved.

Oh and give us some more details of the car your collecting, 'rust' and 'Alfa' doesn't narrow it down much smile

Thanks for the replies chaps, I tried back to the classics but he doesn't have the trailer anymore. He does however have a Lotus Carlton he's doing up on his Facebooke page, almighty car, can't wait to see it driving round here!

I saw that place in Darlington alright, it would be preferential but cost is really an issue as I'm skint! (just bought a house blah blah) Its' just this is to good a car to pass up on! It's a '93 33, it's in a sorry state with some fairly severe rot in the inner and outer sills and a bit of accident damage but I'm an absolute sucker for the 33, I just love them! So it's well worth the trip and worth saving imo.

I think the transporter will be the way to go if I can scrape the cash together as my 156 is lowered 30mm and I reckon the trailer with a car on it might push it down too far!

Have you tried 'Shiply'

https://www.shiply.com/

You put the details in and like a reverse ebay, other people bid for your 'job' until you get a price which is good. I used them a few years ago to bring a car up from Birmingham and it worked out well for me both in terms of reliability, and cost.

Yes shiply is grand, but it can sometimes be a bit of a faff. I once donated an Alfa 145 subframe to a good cause in Scotland, once they organised the shipping. They used Shiply and the chap that turned up was hours late and full of hell because he had undercharged and underestimated the travel and distance. I mean, I'd hung around all day waiting for the git and he was giving me crap because of the traffic he got stuck in! It's a great resource alright but I need somthing cheaper!

I found a crowd in Spennymoor called Altech, the lad seems sound and is flexible with pick up and drop off times (I can pick up Saturday evening and drop it back on the sunday at the same time of day) It's going to cost £45 for 25hrs with £150 deposit. He also has two types of car transporter the sturdy wide one and the one I'll be taking which is only 500kg, very handy for keeping under the 3500kg limit.

Slot is booked and I'm sharing the driving with my Sis (she carries a screwdriver and mini can of WD-40 in her handbag) so it promises to be a mighty trip. I shall update when I get it back.

Thanks again for the advice gents.

That's a worry, he's not back yet

I'm after a small trailer for a Caterham - Kent to Scotch Corner trip - I'll try this Altech but anyone else suggested?

Any offers to collect for me in November?

Cheers

After the weekends haul down to Kent and back I can thoroughly recommend Alan at Altech.
Excellent trailer (the lighter one), cannot grumble at the cost and a nice guy to deal with too.
