We're currently looking at a few properties in the villages south of A66 between Barnard Castle and Richmond (Barningham, Newsham etc). We're looking for somewhere more rural than where we are now (Hartlepool) with land for horses, and good cycling. We've seen a few properties which tick our boxes but a little torn between this area and around the N/Yorks villages (Gt Ayton etc) - which are probably slightly less isolated but more ££ for equivalent properties. I work from home or commute to London so work not an issue as long as I can get to a mainline station fairly easily. Also schools are not a consideration.

If anybody lives in this area I'd really appreciate any views ... eg. how active are the village communities, is everyday stuff a pain (eg.grocery shopping), how bad can the snow get, etc etc.

Hi, missed your original post, will put together some stuff tonight if I get a chance
Suffice to say from Aldbrough St John, nearly everyone shops in Darlo
Richmond has loads of history but crap shops

I live in Middleton Tyas, work from home or go to London/Europe.
We have 80M broadband so working from home is easy and reliable and I'm only 15 mins from Darlington Stn and 30 from Teesside airport (I must be the only one still using it).
We have a pub (2 if you include Moulton, and most do), a shop and a fairly active community, though a lot of it is centered around OAPs.
Shopping is Darlo or Catterick Garrison for supermarkets, Darlo for everything else. Richmond is OK for twee stuff, charity shops and cafes but not much else.

Access out is good if you're anywhere near the A66/A1 - Leeds/York an hour, Newcastle 45 mins to the town centre for us.

Thanks useful info. Middleton Tyas is one of the villages we've looked at and we would definitely consider. Just a case of finding the right property now ! (flexible on property, condition etc, but looking for minimum 4 acres)
