As an alternative I've just finished a purchase and used the online service myhomemove - all completely online so you upload most of the docs (except the deed and mortgage transfer) with no cocking about going into solicitors offices etc to sign things.

Gave me a price up front and been very fast and professional, you can login to your account at any time to see the status, read PDF copies of docs etc, and they send ou a text/email when something updates. Also available on the phone for any questions as needed.

Highly recommended.
