I'm after a nice place to take new Beloved - only caveat is it can't be somewhere I've been with ex-Beloved. This rules out The Chequers Inn in Bilton, The Tawny Owl, and the Stonebridge doodah in Durham. Looking for something similar mind... any recommendations?

Black Bull, Frosterley. Some great roads, excellent food plus fine selection of real ale - booking advisable though.

Crab & Lobster at Asenby is well regarded.
The General Tarleton at Ferrensby is great (went there last year), but it's on the cusp of how far you'd want to go on an evening.
I've heard varying reports about the Castle Eden Inn, mainly centring on the snottiness of the staff. The food seems to be good.
Gisborough Hall is quite nice.
Sunday lunch at the Board Inn in Lealholm is apparently epic. Their sarnies on a Saturday lunchtime are certainly quite, quite mega.
Grinkle Park hotel has a good restaurant, although I haven't been there for years.
Tockett's Mill is trying to raise its game, too.
The Jolly Sailor is not bad, specialises in steaks.

Can vouch for the Black Horse at Kirkby Fleetham - excellent pub. The Royal Oak at Ripon is also worth a trip. The Castle Eden Inn was good last time I was there - always seems very busy (presumably on the back of the success their chef had in Masterchef) and the 2 and 3 course options in the restaurant are very good value (menu changes monthly I think) - certainly a far cry from 5 or so years ago when I had a shockingly bad Sunday lunch there.

The star inn at Harome near Helmsley, very quaint bar area (not a cheap place to eat, but very very nice).

And you get a nice drive out there to boot.

The County at Aycliffe Village or a cheaper option (more basic food but excellent quality and home made) is The Blacksmiths Arms at Preston le Skerne (nr Newton Aycliffe).

The Dog & Gun in Potto was good when I was last there.

The Raby arms in Hart village is nice too, with the best chips ever.

That's the one I meant. I have heard good things about the Raby since it changed hands but haven't managed to get there yet.

Chapters in Stokesley, Joplins in Gt Ayton, or even the Treebridge just outside and near Nunthorpe.
Last I heard Treebridge is not to be recommended.

I always enjoy the Golden Lion at Osmotherley.

Concur. Not worthy of mention in the same breath as Joplins.

I've heard the Black Bull at Ugthorpe is really good for traditional pub food and an excellent Sunday carvery. Straight off main road too for an easy jaunt....

another couple near Stockton

The Vane Arms in Thorpe Thewles (A177 Stockton to Sedgefield) changed hands in the last year and is very good.

The Smiths at Carlton (a couple of miles north west of Stockton)

just a note that The Vane Arms at Longnewton (A66 west of Stockton) seems to be getting good reviews although I have not been for a while.
