Hearing a few rumours that the Tyne tunnel operators have activated speed cameras in the tunnel - anyone else heard anything?

Don't know if there are actual speed cameras.....on the approaches maybe? ...or maybe they use CCTV and number plate recognition....if you get from one end another too quick then you are done!

eeeeeeekkkkk

If its in the tunnel then okay as most folks stick to the 30 and 40 limits. If its the 50/30 approach then everyone is going to get done as they all ignore them.

On their twitter page someone asked about the cameras and they said they could if wanted use the CCTV to work out average speed over distance. I think it's been blown out of proportion.

Why not just assume that a reduced speed would be a good idea in a tunnel, you know, crash, fire in a confined space, that sort of thing... and drive accordingly? It's not like the world is going to end if you have to slow down for half a mile.

Your a saint!

Agreed though.

I do stick to the limit in the tunnel and regularly have someone stuck to my pipes and / or get overtaken by traffic in the other lane! A guy yesterday actually changed lane in the tunnel crossing the double white lines?

As stated previously its entering and leaving the tunnel as the restrictions are ridiculous? especially now that the ques are reduced.

I don't drive around like an idiot but its good to know if cameras are active or not just for reference and comfort.

Their twitter page states NO speed cameras, just CCTV which if they wanted to could be passed to Northumbria police. TT can't prosecute off their own backs. So basically it's the same as its always been and someone's started a Chinese whisper off. I'm off to do 150mph through it now. thumbup

They want to point them at the start of the northbound tunnel , sick to death of folk joining from Jarrow then driving over the white line to get in the outside lane , bloody morons.

+1
I had a guy follow me through the tunnel one day, him and his wife both had their windows down and were laughing their heads off at the noise I was making, great fun.

Not a bit of it, but there's a time and a place. The authorities do notice persistent p155-taking, for example on the 50 stretch of the A66 through Stockton where they often park Police cars on sliproads and use unmarked patrols to catch those who just HAVE to blast through in spite of the obvious collection of hazards.

I know someone who works there, and yes there was talk of speed cameras / traps, but it was a while ago and I don't know if anything became of it.

While we're on the subject of TT and queues though, can anyone tell me why, after months and months of no queues on the A19 northbound in Jarrow on a morning, there has been queues every morning again? Seems like we're back to the good old days...

Whizzed through at 60 to 70 (very early in the morning) about three weeks ago and I've heard nothing.
