Christmas Day maserati crash

First off, I hope the guy is ok.
I heard from a friend in the media who was working on Xmas day that they had heard of a guy crashing his Maserati on the 1231. Their thoughts were ...bloke, Maserati, 1231,....footballer....but apparently it was an older guy in a classic? Not sure what is meant by classic as this person is not into cars. I only know one person with a classic Maserati and its off the road so not him...

The driver of a Maserati sports car had to be cut free by fire crews after hitting a concrete bridge on Christmas Day.
The crash happened at 11am on the A1231 in Washington on Wearside.
Crews from Washington Community Fire Station cut the roof from the car and the male driver was lifted out on a stretcher.
He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle by ambulance suffering suspected injuries to his spine as well as cuts and bruises.
