Hi all,

I am trying to find a couple of tunnels in the region where I can blast through and have a listen to the sounds of my V8. Obvious one is the Tyne tunnel, then there's the one at Corbridge, and some longish tunnel-like underpasses such as on the A167 just after the Tyne Bridge, and the A1058 just before passing Jesmond Dene.
Anyone with more suggestions?

Cheers,
Sean

Can't think of any others. The one at jesmond has speed camera and is 40 limit so not much good! Tyne tunnel has 40 limit but not sure if it has any cameras. Signs suggest it does. I attended an organised tunnel run there which was good but very busy. The one near tyne bridge is decent but a bit on the short side. Is the corbridge one at brockbushes? Never tried that!

The Corbridge one is indeed at Brockbushes - according to a friend who lives there the owners are "not happy" with cars tearing through it, though I'm not sure if they actually own it, I would have thought it belonged to the local authority so they will have to go on being annoyed. I've never actually driven through it but it is pretty short, only takes a couple of seconds to get through by car.

I saw some videos of a Tyne tunnel run event where the tunnel was closed at night and had a load of Japanese cars running through it, I think it was £10 for two runs with the money going to charity. Looked like good fun but they said in the rules that they didn't want anyone going above second gear, so the speed were sort of limited by that.

I don't know if there are any speed cameras in the Tyne tunnel, according to some friends who use it on a regular basis it doesn't seem to have any, never tested that myself though!

Thanks for the replies guys, and the link to the previous thread too.
I forgot about the one under Central Station, ace.

I've found Long Rigg Road to have a good underpass, reasonably long and its never been busy when I've been there. Not a fast road, but wide enough to even stop and have a bit of a rev as its two lanes so traffic can pass.
Interestingly, its right next to where Metro Radio used to be so would be a good detour on the way to the Metrocentre meets for the loud cars and bikes...

Although not a tunnel the road underneath the flyover in Gateshead ( just after the Tyne bridge) is quite enclosed (especially northbound) so is pretty good, and is usually quite clear.

That was the event I did, there was talk of only 1st and 2nd gear but that went out the window and everyone was driving flat out! Was a good night but a much bigger turnout than expected plus horrible weather meant lots of queuing and no opportunity to look at cars as most of parking area was flooded. It was mainly jap cars but some others.
My favourite is the small tunnels near tyne bridge, always drop a few gears for them!

Turn off Swan House roundabout down towards the Quayside and after the curved car park on the left take the next turn _ fantastic tunnel and a great photo opportunity if the light is right.

Also agree with the tunnels leading north from Tyne Bridge on central motorway.

Head to the passport office at Durham.

There is a large building that covers the entire road so its almost a tunnel. I have to 'test it' every time I go that way.ears
