As I have the 'good-fortune' to have to commute along the A167 every day, past the new Durham Gates development, thought I'd see if anyone can shed any light on what seem to be some 'weird' speed limits.

Travelling from Durham, there is a speed limit of 40 mph at the Croxdale roundabout, which then used to go to NSL. With the road works at Thinford and the new York Hill Road roundabout, they now have a 40 limit from Croxdale to York Hill Road roundabout, NSL from York Hill Road to Thinford, 30 mph at Thinford, and back to NSL after Thinford roundabout.

Why is there a 40 mph limit from Croxdale to York Hill Roundabout when there are no road works along this stretch? Why is there then a NSL limit from York Hill roundabout to Thinford when there are roadworks on this stretch?

I've tried to find the relevant traffic orders from Durham County Council (DCC), with no luck, the most I can see is the proposal to create a 40 mph limit between Thinford roundabout and the York Hill roundabout, which Durham Constabulary objected to due to the road safety record of this stretch, but DCC over-ruled them and intend to instate a 40 mph limit here - however, this is the stretch that is currently NSL during these roadworks.

My fear is that the current 'temporary' 40 mph limit between York Hill roundabout and Croxdale is a sneaky way of introducing a permanent 40 mph limit here, once the roadworks at Durham Gates are completed.

Can any North East PH'ers shed any light on these speed limits, anyone have any ideas what the limits are going to be once the works are completed?
