I have started a new job at South Shields (Town Hall), but I commute from the West Denton area of Newcastle. At the moment I am using public transport, because it is cheaper than driving, and it is probably almost as quick.

However, I am giving some consideration to cycling the route.... but having never done it, I don't know exactly how feasible it would be.

What would be the best route... I'd like to stay off roads for as much as possible. Someone told me about the Hadrian route, as there is apparently a cycle lane all the way to the pedestrian tunnel, but what then?

Has anyone done it? How long does it take? Worth doing (for fitness and financial reasons)?

From the pedestrian tunnel to Town Hall would take you around 15 minutes, depending on your fitness/speed.

Here's the route I'd recommend, you can do it on the pavement all the way

You can cycle from ncle quayside all the way to pedestrian tunnel on both sides of the river without really going anywhere near a main road. Both very good cycle paths and well marked. starting point on the North side is really the millenium bridge, South bank is the elephant on the tyne hotel.

From Ped tunnel to shields you can cut through tyne dock if required..

On north bank of tyne you could always cycle to n shields and unwind for 10 mins on the shields ferry...

Lots of great cycling in ncle.

No problem, it'd be an easy pedal to be honest, the majority of it is level ground, the hardest bit would be going home when you got to Bedes World at Jarrow as it's all uphill to near enough the pedestrian tunnel.

Cool, might be worth trying then. I'm pretty unfit at the moment, but I guess that would change soon enough!

Thing is, it'll be about £90 a month on public transport, probably double in petrol if I was to drive, and frankly, I intensely dislike public transport; although I have to admit the metro from ncle to shields is pretty decent (so far!).

Very doable. I used to sort of go the exact opposite way in that I would occasionally cycle from Whitley Bay to Gateshead Stadium area. The cycle routes are probably best on the south side of the river on balance. A big chunk of the route is through riverside park which should be quite pleasant. So maybe cross over the Millenium Bridge and work your way along from there.

I'm cycling two or three days a week at the moment and actually really enjoying it. It's a bit of a faff at both ends but the bit in between is far less stressful than driving. It's surprising how much of a better mood I'm in just for getting a little exercise first thing.

And lastly, good luck in the new job Paul. Saw your post on facebook and meant to say it earlier. I like it when things work out. smile

Cheers mate smile I've been quite fortunate really.

I think I'm going to go for it. Not only will I save money but I will regain some badly needed fitness.
