I have to make this trip tomorrow morning, I cant decide whether to go A1 or A19. I don't need to be there til 10ish so plan on leaving at 8ish.

Any local knowledge based tips?

I do this trip fairly regularly from Chester Le Street. A1 every time.

Don't forget there's the long stretch of average 50mph through the A1 upgrade from Leeming Bar.

Depending on where abouts in Harrogate you are going it might be worth coming off on the A61 down to Ripon and on to Harrogate.

I forgot to mention I'm in gosforth, so getting on the A19 is pretty straightforward, I routinely commute to Hartlepool, and traffic is normally ok.

A1 is a better bet,if you're not in too much of a rush turn off for Ripon and follow the signs to Harrogate as its a nice road not much further than the A1,it also gets you off the 50 limit a lot sooner.

Personally would take A19 everytime its actually shorter and probably more free flowing due to the roadworks on A1.

perhaps I'll search the travel news in the morning, does the A19 get bogged down in Middlesborough in the am - I would expect to be there about 9ish if I went that route?

Depends. Normally it is ok.

I go earlier, though.

8am it does but tends to be clear later, more chance of that being clear than the A1 with the roadworks.

It used to, but the A1 has partly opened just south of the A61 (Thirsk-Ripon road) junction now!

Edit: Just re-read the OP so I'm a little too late hehe

hehe He'll have to pass mine to get to yours, so I agree with this biggrin

From Bishop I'd head up the A1. If you're wanting to go over the tops head up the A68, but it's far longer.
