Has anyone else noticed a lot of speed checks going on today? Out for a drive this lunchtime on the A167 C-L-S there was a scamera van parked waiting for business in the 50 limit before the Church Mouse (unlucky Mr tailgating transit tt who decided to pass me doing about 70+, you may well get banned) then on the A68 a marked 5 series parked up near Hamsterley forest right in the dip (no one speeds there surely) and then lastly driving into Stanley at about 2pm a marked transit with one of those 'smile if you're under the limit' type matrix boards. Coincidence or are they targetting speeders?

I got pulled yesterday for doing 38 in a 30. (speed gun, hidden behind hedgerow) I was totally in the wrong and show know better at that point in Aycliffe Village.

The Policeman had no intention of issuing a ticket, and i didn't get one. Just a quick reminder to slow it down, which i duly will.

A brilliant approach, as he could speak to and educate 10 drivers in the time it would take to issue a ticket to one.

You were lucky, but definately good to see a bit of discretion being exercised. I don't have a problem with speed checks/ enforcement, just that 2 of the 3 I saw as posted above weren't in accident blackspots, they were just set up to catch lots of 'customers' and rake money in from fines. If the mobile camera had been set up outside a school or a hospital on the other hand, no problem, anyone stupid enough to be speeding past the front of a school deserves points.

I got pulled this time last year, as I over took an unmarked police car on a country road in Durham. He never stopped me for speeding and ironically commented on the excellent quality of my overtaking, but was advising me that at this time of year, Durham Police increase their road awareness efforts and stop a lot more drivers as the roads get slippier and days get darker and advised me that the road I was traveling on could be dangerous in the frost.

I was a bit miffed for being stopped given I'd done nowt wrong, but it explains the increased presence and advisory approach this time of year which I think is really good as there are loads of dick heads on the road.

Durham have long been known for only having one camera setup .They are not soft touches ,but prefer an "acid lecture " with education to outright prosecutions .Their safety record in the road safety league over the years has proved the point that ,with the least number of cameras ,they've got the best record in road safety .Somehow ,the ol fashioned approach has been provan to work .So much for pitmansboots propaganda .
