Well its dawned on me this week that in the last year I have only done 1300 miles in the vx220. Now i have got myself thinking is it worth actually keeping it? are the costs to tax/insure/service it worth it for such low use? I could also do with the garage space.

Tell me i am going soft in the head or is it a good idea?

I would probably go back to one car (an x reg 1.8 mondeo at the min) or maybe look to replace it with a cheap mx5 or similar. Would have to be something small though to fit in my garage. The vx fits by about 2 inches length wise!

That's high mileage compared to what I do in the 944!

Simple, just use it more!

I don't know you but since you're asking for advice on here I'll give you my two penneth (FWIW): It's tempting to look at a sports car in the garage at this time of year and think about whether to sell it for various reasons, taking up space, lack of use, SWMBO wants a new bathroom or whatever. Two points then. If you sell a sports car now you'll get a crap price as it's a buyers market at this time of year. Secondly, when it gets to Spring next year and we start getting some fine weather, being able to go for a drive in a 2 seater with the roof off is something to look forward to through the winter. If you don't have it, you may regret it.
Nothing to stop you using it at this time of year (or at least until Derwentside council start salting the roads)
Unless you've got to sell it or have just had enough of it, I'd say keep it, sod the cost and use it a bit more. HTH.

Derwentside council gritting the roads? are you having a laugh man?? they are hopeless.

As theres no bill due on the car til next year, think i might try and hold onto it to spring then see how i feel.

Or maybe stick it up for a quite high price and see if it sells, if it doesnt it doesnt as theres no pressing need to sell it wont make much difference to me.

I was faced with the same situation plus moved house and would have meant either finding storage for the Monaro or leave it outside to rot, plus id only done 600miles in it for a year I took the very hard decision to sell it, goes tomorrow may cry who knows but pointless keeping it if not getting used.

I was in the same boat a few months ago but decided to insure the car for work use and start using it a bit more. The tax has just run out, I won't use it over the winter anyway so I've decided to stick it into storage for the next few mths and at a tenner a week it's hardly breaking the bank.... Out of sight, out of mind and all that.

Insano, sorry to hear you're considering jacking in.

You may have seen my recent post, but I also recently left the fold, but for very different reasons, I'm hoping to return at some point, but nothing planned so far, still a true PH'er though, so I'll still be hanging around.

Only you can decide, I'm sure the true PH response would be to keep it, but reality can be a different story, whatever you decide, keep in touch.

(ps hope you got the work issues sorted, we were talking about at Hartside a while ago).

Take care, Speak soon

Sean.

yup got the issue sorted, however it left me with a very sour taste in my mouth, a final written warning and a £4200 legal bill. To be honest the whole thing was barmy. (i would say that but trust me everyone i have told the full story too thinks exactly the same)

insano - what is the reason that you are not using your car much? Lack of time? Ongoing fuel costs?

Am I right in thinking you had an MX5 before the VX? If so, were you using that more?

My elise has only managed 1300 miles in 2.5 years! It's still in the garage, taxed, MOt'd and ready to go. And it'll probably stay like that until April unfortunately.

Only you can decide, but they don't devalue much so don't think you'll be better off selling it and buying a depreciating asset. (ie. new kitchen for the missus etc), you'll be worse off if you do that and especially (as already said) selling it at this time of year.

Bang some miles on it over the winter and flog it in the spring if you really have to.

the mx5 got used more yes, mainly because it was shared between myself and my dad, unfortunately with 2 hip replacements he cannot get in and out of the vx220 to drive it

Would he still be able to get in and out of an MX-5? If so, might it be better to swap the VX for one, so that you can both enjoy the car and get more use out of it?

It would be a shame to go without something fun if you might both use it.

Canny idea but an mx5 will not fit in my garage, about 1/3 of the garage is used as a utility room leaving space for the vx and about 2 spare inches. A mx5 is too long.

Still think i will review the situation early next summer, keep the vx til then.
