Hi guys,

I'm up visiting my girlfriend in Durham university, Stockton Campus. Can you reccommend any places to dine/visit as I'm at a loose end as to what to do. Looking to go out for a meal later, anywhere worth s visit or is it best to just go to the Burger King around the corner?

Plan how you're going to tell her it's not really Durham uni hehe

Call langbargh and see whether there is any arrive and drive karting on today would be my suggestion.

hehe She has already developed an annoying accent! Its far too pretentious in these parts, despite not being in Durham itself, its still Durham University..

Ask any Durham grad if it's really Durham uni ;D I was at Scumbag polly/uni in Middlesbrough when it was joint venture between Durham and Teesside in the early 90s - even we looked down on them hehe

Joking apart, if you don't fancy karting in Boro, Stockton is only half an hour away from the NY Moors - home to some of the best driving roads in the country.

Do the Helmsley - Stokesly TT road and then over to the Blakey Ridge road (The B1257 and the Blakey Road respectively). They make a great loop and even in this weather; you'll have a cracking drive.

I should've trailored the mini up! I might be tempted to venture into Durham to find a resurant, google maps reckons its about half an hours drive. I'll see how I get on!

Do it next visit - the roads are ideal for a mini.

If you visit Durham and fancy doing the studenty thing try the Dun Cow challenge. If you don't but like beer, the Dun Cow is still a cracking little pub for a quick pint with LOTs of great beers. Great 20 years ago (my wife was at Durham too) and still the same by all accounts.

Other random food places :

The Cooks Room in Stokesley,
Cafe Lillies in Norton
Santoros' in Yarm

What do you (she) actually want to do ?

Helmsley TT and then a night in the Spa is a big shout !
Good call - Verbena Spa - OP if you're feeling flush and want lots of brownie points treat the O/H to spa and then dinner in one of the top 200 hotels in the world (apparently). Not cheap mind. I wandered down for Lunch the other weekend when it was sunny and it came to nigh on £60 for two with a few drinks.

My gf is a Durham BSc and PhD graduate, and now works at Stockton Campus for 3 days of the week (the rest at Collingwood), and as you say, she insists its not really Durham. lol

On a serious note, food wise go into Yarm. There's a nice small Italian opposite the Cross Keys. I cannae remember its name though.
And there is always Starters if all else fails.

Santoros is good but all of the other eating places are good......even the fish and chip shop. 2 indian restaurants / Starters / Hide / Cross Keys and all the rest( 6 or 7 others)...do not cross the bridge tho that is deffinately ordinary food. It is one of the best 300 yards of entertainment. Evening wise Tuesday is busy (Grab-a-Granny night) bouncers on the doors to make sure not over crowded etc. got to try the Black Bull, George and Dragon

I'm back home now after following several HGV's side-by-side up the A19 shoot and several diversions from the TomTom as they decided to close the motorway to Chester at rush hour today. Took the junction hoping the exit was open, but was apparently shut, so I ended up queuing back in the direction I had came from, to get back on the motorway and que to come off to get back in the direction of Liverpool! It wasn't the most pleasurable of drives.

Anyway, these are all cracking ideas for next time I head up. For dinner I ended up in Pizza Express on the Teesside Romantic Retail Park hehe
