I've accepted a 2 week stint in our Croydon office starting Mon 16th and staying down there Mon to Fri.

I've heard mixed things about the place. I will be staying at the Jurys and working 5 mins walk away.

I may take my road bike down there (secure storage dependent) to go out in the evenings for a bit of excercise. I know that even 2 weeks eating on expenses can pile on the weight especially at my age (46).

Any other suggestions what a married bloke in his 40s can do in the evening apart from drink and watch porn in my hotel room?

Get some coke and hookers in.

Alternatively, you can experience the delights of IKEA.

Other than that... Er...

Not many towns can claim to have invented a haircut.

Weep, and ponder how your life turned out as it did.

Oh, and look forward to leaving.

Wing Yip for oriental food supplies? That's all I can think of that's decent in the area.

Best slit your wrists now I'm afraid.

I got a job in Croydon in 85 and worked there until last year.
It wasn't much cop to start with but it truly is a st hole now.

Do be careful at night, I worked for a few years in the office building opposite Jury's Inn and the whole floor of bored office workers kept up a 'scum watch' on the YMCA just across the road.

All day long the denizens would be drinking cider and smoking dope.
An ambulance would turn up about 4 or 5 times a day to cart one of them off and at least 2 or 3 times a week half a dozen police cars would rock up and cart off a few of the scum in handcuffs.

If you lit a cigarette in that road then beggars would run across the road to try their luck for a fag or money.

I hope that your 5 minutes walk to the office is towards the Fairfield Halls and not towards West Croydon..............

Croydon is also the main place for asylum seekers, due to some sort of main home office place. Apart from this and all the other points raised, it is an ok place..

There is also the fairfield halls. They have Hamlet and Superslam Wrestling on whilst you are. How diverse is that!

Probably the safest option.

Central London 15 minutes north by train.

Nicer places like Redhill are about the same time south.

I wouldn't loiter on the street in Croydon after 6pm.

Switch to a London hotel and commute to Croydon from London Bridge station.

Already booked into Jurys. Not my choice. The office where I'm working sort out all the accommodation and they get (so called) good rates at Jurys. Still costing £80 per night.

So, absolutely nothing positive to say then!

I lived in Sheffield for over 20 years and some parts of the centre can be a bit tastey at night but didn't have any problems. Is Croydon that much worse?

Survive the tram from East Croydon to Wimbledon then walk up the hill to the Village. Nice pubs, nice places to eat and then camp amongst the trees on the common.

The Vue cinema is 5 mins away in the old Grants building. Plenty of good restaurants down in South Croydon just past Pizza Express. The Fish & Grill is very good or try 1860 for something different. The Glamorgan on Cherry Orchard Road is a decent South African gastro pub. Try the bunny chow. If you like curry The Banana Leaf has won loads of awards. The beer garden at the Dog & Bull in Surrey Street Market is lovely on a sunny evening.

Late night shopping on a Thursday. House of Fraser normally have a sale on.

If you are there at the weekend jump a 466 up to The Fox in Coulsdon and have a walk through Happy Valley, or go up to Crystal Palace park and have a look at the dinosaurs or admire the view from the steps. Joannas is a good little restaurant up there.

Croydon is OK as long as you're not driving. It's a suburb with a 'rich' multicultural mix. Anyone who thinks its a war zone needs to MTFU it's not that bad.

Thanks bignathy.

Cinema might be an idea one night.
Like the sound of a good beer garden in the evenings.
Trouble is it soon gets boring/sad eating out on your own 4 nights a week.
In the past I've ended up taking a kebab and a couple of bottle of becks to my room and having a slob out watching a film.
