Off for a day trip to London today (Tuesday bank hol), will head over to Canary Wharf and surrounding areas.

Gather most the tubes are not running from outskirts of London. What is and isn't running? And if so anywhere to park during the day near to Canary Wharf? And is congestion charging off this week?

Tuesday should be Christmas Bank Holiday, so shouldn't be CC. Do check though.

Why would anyone ever choose that bit of London to visit?

I'm goin for a two day trip on wednesday and thursday with the gf. (From manchester).
Spend hours and hours planning it- including all tube conections; planning on doing a whole bunch of things, London eye, walking over to buck palace. Shopping in oxford street-after having breakfast in this place http://www.garfunkels.co.uk, window shopping in bondstreet/old bond street.

Having a look in harrods (before we go back).Tower of london, and a play at the end of the 1st day. biggrin Really excited.

Maybe a few ideas there for ya...

Christ no! Clearly you spent all of 20secs researching your breakfast location. This chain are an awful tourist trap, serving overpriced nonsense. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere decent.

Try 'The Breakfast Club' in D'arbley St in Soho, just south of Oxford St, presuming that's where' you'll be.. been there a few times and quite nice quality fry up, or bagel/croissant brekkie..

Not tried the Breakfast Club but sounds interesting

Agree that Garfunkals not worth a visit. If you want something a little more informal, I go to 'Le Pain Quotdien' quite often in the morning. There are a few around and one on Great Marlborogh street is near Oxford Street, but this is more pastry/light breakfast place - not a fry up place. Has free internet, so I usually pop in if I am early for a meeting nearby.

If looking for something more of an event, you could try The Parlour at Sketch on Conduit Street. Not had breakfast there before - but been to an event there and the food was good, but the interior is pretty different. Maybe worth a try.

Otherwise head for St. Christopher's Place/James Street area off Oxford Street or Market Place/Market Street if at the other end of Oxford Street, and you will find plenty of other places to try.

Canary Wharf on a bank holiday will be dead apart from the shops. Worth a look only.

Canary Wharf on a normal day is dead, unless you like bankers talking about banking.

Take the DLR to Greenwich, park and market plus Maritime museum, walk back under Thames through the tunnel, back on DLR to Canary Wharf to get the Thames clipper to Embankment, West end - home.

He's not wrong. The only time I would consider them is at Heathrow, as the least worst option.

If you want something reliable near Oxford St you do have a few options. Personally I love The Star Cafe in Soho for good old fashioned service and a great menu serving good food at a decent price. Its been going for years and is one of the last of the Italian family run cafe's to grace Soho.

Amongst the many, a couple of regular haunts.

Breadline
4 Duncannon St, City of London WC2N 4JF 020 7930 8516 ‎

This is a sit down or takeaway cafe. Very good, used it a lot. Does breakfast and full lunch menu. But it is a cafe...........

Porkys Pantry
49 Chandos Pl, City of London WC2N 4HS 020 7836 0967 ‎

This is more of just a takeaway cafe with a few stools. Also very good, again used it a lot.

Caffe Strand
460 Strand, Charing Cross, City of London WC2R 0RG 020 7930 1355 ‎

Good for coffee and pastries.
