Mrs Village and I are considering living on Pelton Road. We know there are a couple of pubs down there, the Pelton Arms and Royal Standard. Anyone local who lives there or near there who can offer some local knowledge?

Cheers

I live in west Greenwich but I know the area. What do you want to know?

Just a general appraisal really of what it's like to live there, what the pubs are like, anything to consider for that road in particular, or the roads around there... essentially a balanced residents view.

I did pop down yesterday and had a chat to a bloke who was in his front garden, very friendly and gave me a positive but realistic view of how it's changed since he's lived there.

I nearly moved to Hadrian Street a couple of years and was fairly impressed with the area.

As with most of London, there's good and bad. The good parts would include...

  • Good pubs locally; the two you mentioned, the Cutty Sark (superb Sunday lunches and you can sit by the river), the Vanbrugh and Hardy's for the football
  • Very close to the river and the park; the Thames path is great but it's a bit chopped up what with all the new development going on. Once that's done it'll be fantastic
  • Proper local garage; Parkway Motors is just around the corner
  • Pelton Road is a quiet street; you wouldn't imagine Trafalgar Road is a short distance away. Plus, if you work in town, the walk to Cutty Sark DLR is through the Naval College which is a lovely route in. It's also very close to Maze Hill station and has good access to the Blackwall Tunnel and the A2
I suppose the less good parts would be...

  • Trafalgar Road is where all your local shops are but it's a bit grotty. Lots of places to eat; wouldn't recommend many of them at all. Good fun when the Marathon is on, though, as they go that way which is quite cool to watch. Seems to be frequently jammed up with cars at the weekend
  • Some of the local estates are a bit rough but that's just London for you
  • Quite a lot of construction going on locally so expect lots of dust and lorries whizzing about
That's about it, really. There's no proper rough parts of Greenwich but I'm biased because I love the place biggrin
