Does anyone know where i could find work experience or any work relating to engineering/motorsport, 11th July - 05th August, in london? Im 18 years old and im thinking of doing a masters in engineering but i have no prior experience, so not good for career opportunities.
Any help most appreciated.

There's a previous thread on this from a few weeks ago. general consensus was go to races, offer to help out. You'll fetch tea, fetch spanners, fetch tyres, fetch tea, fetch coffee, fetch tea, fetch parts, fetch tea........

It's extremely hard to get in to the sport, especially with the recession. That's the best you'll get, if you get that, but it's probably the best shot you have at the moment.

If you look for smaller engineering suppliers rather than teams there are plenty of companies around. Getting work experience has become more difficult, however. I'm loosely in the motorsport industry (I also used to be an engineer in the mainsteam automotive industry) so I'll have a think.

There are two things I would say. Don't worry too much at this stage; if you can get something now that's good and it'll stand you in good sted, but any engineering program worth its salt will be able to fix you up with plenty of placements over the next three or four years. Secondly - and perhaps this applies more to university placements but its still worth thinking about - try and get some indication of what you're actually going to do before you begin the placement. A week making the tea isn't hugely useful.

Of the top flight teams Red Bull F1 always seem to be quite receptive (a friend's son has just done work experience there) and they're not a million miles away in Silverstone...

Thanks. I live in north london, but my car would not be comfortable driving at 70mph for long periods (its 15 years old and a 0.9ltr engine). Would i still be able to get to Silverstone and back every day? If not then its not worth me asking them for a job.

Which other companies is it worth contacting? Would BAE be a good idea?

BAE are always influxed with graduates looking for work experience, so an undergraduate may not do too well but it's worth trying.

Why can you not stay somewhere else over the summer?

I could stay somewhere, do the companies have accomodation, or would i stay in a b&b? How much would it cost to stay for a few weeks?

I would look closely at companies based in Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas that supply components to race teams, or to look closely at those in the lower levels of motorsport, from single seaters to saloon and one model series.

OP: none of these companies will supply soft toilet paper or wipe your arse for you, either! you're connected to the internet, could you not perhaps look up some companies and some B&Bs?

Finally some helpful advice. I will bear this in mind in future.

You've started two threads in which you've shown absolutely no ingenuity or displayed any ability to think for yourself. you don't even sound as though you have a clue what you want to do other than a pipe dream about working for a formula one team. It sounds to me like you might actually need help with wiping your arse, and now you're being sarcastic? good luck, you're going to need it.

Correct observation. I don't/didn't have much of a clue what i want to do. Hence why i am asking this community for some kind advice, 90% of which has been extremely useful to me. I am therefore now in a clearer mind than i was before i came here.
Thanks for your kind wishes

Ashi, i mean this nicely, don't start getting arsy with people. As Pothole said, you've taken up 3 Threads asking for advice but don't seem to have done much to find info for yourself. People (Myself included) are happy to help you but if you get defensive, that's less likely to happen.

We get a lot of threads like this all asking the same thing, and we get bored of repeating ourselves. Generally, people who start these have atleast searched PH to find the older threads. You are going to have to work hard to get the job of your dreams, so start now and don't rely on everyone else.

Like i said, this isn't a nasty or moaning message, just something to bear in mind.
