I know very little about TT's.

A friend of mine has just been quoted £3,000 to service her car. A 1999 car, it's done 53,000 miles.

quote said:
Good afternoon Ms Blib's Friend,

As per your conversation with my colleague, please find detailed below the report from your Audi TT…

New engine sump required - £493.30
NSF track rod end has excessive play - £272.99
Quattro system oil & filter change required - £372.73
Cambelt & waterpump replacement recommended - £449.00
Battery replacement recommended - £298.84
Rear brake pads 90% worn - £99.00
Rear brake discs worn - £166.05
OSF intermittently not working – new headlamp required - £561.63
Brake fluid change due - £49.00
Cam cover gasket leaking oil - £515.73

All prices above include parts, labour and VAT

Regards, John
Any views on the prices quoted?

It looks pretty steep to me (going on no experience whatsoever). Especially £550 for a headlamp! yikes

Does anyone have a good independent Audi garage that can save her a few quid? She lives n Central London so anywhere within the M25 would be good.

TIA.

Good bunch of guys no thrills but know what they are doing.

The waterpump belts etc are recommended with the cambelt and it is a long labour job circa £260 when they last did mine, the rest seems to be parts and the aint cheap unless they use ebay !

Autopool Iver, ask for Phil. More straightforward and apparently honest than most, in my experience. Autopool

Beats me. Mt friend is a middle aged woman who drives mostly in central London. The garage, who I'd love to name on here but won't coz of PH's 'name and shame' policy, seems to be trying it on.

Hence this thread.

I can only assume main dealer at which they probably are not trying it on, it most likely is down to the fact they don't know how to fix anything and instead replace it.

I am confident that a sump is less than £50 plus the oil which they would change at the service, belts all need doing as said, as will the haldex oil etc but the headlight could be fixed if they new how, the brake's are over priced, the driveshaft I think is over priced.

She will be looking at a bill nearing a grand if not more even at an independant if all of that needs doing / fixing rather than replacing.

The sump plug strips very, very easily and can ruin the sump, unless the garage is prepared to repair it. The headlight price is right-ish but that might not fix it if it's the ignitor which lies outside the headlight. Audi quoted £600 for a new unit for my son's (now sold) 2000 model 225 TT intermittent headlight PLUS labour! It necessitates removing the front of the car to gain access to the headlight unit and can double the cost. The ballast/ignitor is under the headlight so it has to come out anyway, and is the most likely cause of the failure. I bought a second hand ignitor from HIDS4U and grafted it into the wiring of the existing unit leaving the dead one in situ. Wrap it up in a polybag and cable tie it place and Bob's your uncle for £100.

Bloody hell that is very pricey, a battery is only £50.00 notes for a cheap one circa £100.00 for a decent one, I really don't see what they are charging for on the haldex as that seems to only cover oil and labour very odd ??

I got a call from my friend who's car this is this morning. She tells me of a weird couple of calls she had with the garage manager.

In the first, she called him this morning and he treated her with utter contempt. Saynig he didnt want to waste time talking to her and to take it or leave it. He refused to consider "re-plugging" the sump and basically dared her to take the car away.

A few minutes later, he called her back and, as if the first conversation had not happened, offered to fit a new sump at cost - £200. He was apologetic and my friend was dumbfounded.

She agreed to his offer. More news as and when.

Either get it out now before they do any work, you may have to pay them for the so called diagnosis then get it to one of our recommendations, or let them do the work and then get it out of there, depends how much confidence they have and how asseretive they are but I would say no and get rid.

If they have cover get the AA or RAC to tow.
