don't let a builder carry out electrical work unless he is, or uses a qualified sparks who can test, inspect and certificate the work.
Work has to be certificated unless all you are doing is changing a light bulb pretty much.
The old chestnut goes "nah, they charge too much" and "its only small and you don't need a certificate"( Odds on thet'll charge you a sparks rate anyway and pocket it themselves)
Any builder worth his salt employs registered and qualified and insured tradesmen.... plumbers, brickies, decorators etc etc
Preferably use an NICEIC registered electrician !Good luck with your project

The Polish chaps i used last time had a qualified sparky - haven't come across any dodgy ones yet fortunately - just need someone who is a bit more clued up on 1920s/30s interiors. Seems all the builders are still on holiday ...

I have a friend called Paul who runs a decorators called Indigo based in Wimbledon, they are very good and can do other jobs. He is linked with a company called Loop Electric who are qualified electricians. PM me and I'll give you details.
