Recommend me an area (North London - Finchley?)
Discussion
Due to relocation after starting my first job after university I am need of finding myself somewhere to live. I will be working in Welwyn Garden City, north of M25, and ideally don’t want to commute more than 45 minutes (car). There is a chance I will be living with my Girlfriend and she needs to be in central London relatively easily as well. I’m on the hunt for some sort of compromise.
I ideally like somewhere with relatively good connections into London, relatively youthful population, decent road links, green space, safe etc.
I am realistic to know that I am unlikely to get the all my desires, but suggestions to locations would be good. It is also worth noting that the max budget is around £210/ week, excluding bills for a 1 bed flat.
I have been looking at Finchley? Any comments on the area, is the East livelier? Also am I being realistic to think that is about as far I can go in order to be in Welwyn in under an hour at 8 in the morning?
Sorry for all the questions, and thanks for all replies.
Cheers Rob

You should be able to get something for that in the Finchley area. E Finchley is said to have more of a community feel to it, and is closer to trendy Muswell Hill.
W Finchley is more your typical London suburb, and nothing else. N Finchley has a number of pubs/bars, restaurants, etc, and is most convenient for getting to the A1 north.

The High Road can be a bit of a pain if you're in Finchley.
I live in Enfield (a bit further out and a bit to the east) and that quite a pain because you're dependent on trains and buses rather than the tube. Trust me, after you've taken the night bus back from South London a couple of times you'd wish you lived on a tube line!
However, places like Barnet, Enfield and Cockfosters are very leafy and feel much less like London (if that makes sense) than those just a little bit further in (say within the North Circ).
Cockfosters is probably quite a good bet - has a tube station and it's a straight road for about a mile to the M25.

However, I did have to sell my soul to get a house with a garage here.
That's how it happened! I always wonder how those people you see driving through Camden afford it. Looks like it'd be a nice place to be, a huge amount going on around there, although it's a bit of a shame they did the insurance job on the market.Harsh said:
actually the refurbed bit doesn't look too bad now.
i love living in Camden and would highly recommend it to anyone.
I love camden, but couldnt bear living in the middle of it...St Johns Wood for me, 10 minute walk to camden along the canal, but on sunday morning I can go for a coffee without having to walk over passed out people!i love living in Camden and would highly recommend it to anyone.
