Renting a room - somewhere central?

Hello London people, I'm after some help!
I'm in Bristol currently but the work situation (commercial property
) eans that I might be offered a "free transfer" (!) to another part of the business I work within (the other alternative is lots more free time but no salary...).
One of those options might include a London opportunity but I have no idea what the housing costs would look like or what the availability is.
I'd be in Fetter Lane and in an ideal world I'd like to be within walking distance BUT I am happy to walk a couple of miles each way. I suppose the real answer is I'd end up a train/tube ride away?
I'm looking for some ideas of where I'd find it easy to rent a room probably on a Monday-Friday lodging basis? A rough idea of cost and anything else that might be helpful.
