...near Enfield/Cuffley?

Don't suppose anyone has any experience of it?

Seen quite a nice house there (biiiig garage! smile), but I'm unsure of the area and in particular the transport links - you can night-bus back to Enfield, but finding your way to Crews Hill at 3am on a Saturday morning could be difficult.

Ah, so you're closing in on where you want to live eh Chris? Is the house near the multitude of Garden centres in the area? The roads about can get extremely busy on weekends and Bank Holidays if the sun shines.

Well, really I'd like the transport links that you get in Enfield itself (principally the night bus for going out in London after the tube has stopped), however I'd also like a nice big garage and somewhere with a bit of space and greenery.

We saw a gorgeous house in Enfield Town that backs onto the river with a decent driveway and a nice detatched garage, but the owner has decided she might not be putting onto the market afterall. Since then we've had difficulty finding anything in the centre of Enfield that offers the sort of thing we're after, so we went to look at this place in Crew's Hill.

I'd never been there before and the idea was that if it sat next to Whitewebbs in one direction and the village pub in the other, then this would more than make up for having to get a taxi across from Enfield after a night out. I'm a yocal at heart and something a bit greener than the town centre would have been very welcome... However, there's nothing there apart from a rather uninspiring chain pub and a seemingly never-ending maze of garden centres!

Last night I happened to bump into a friend of mine who moved from Winchmore Hill to Crews Hill some years ago. I asked him about living there and he was full of praise for the place. He really enjoys living there, surrounded by countryside. Didn't mention any downside at all tbh.

I didn't ask him about night buses to Enfield tho' smile

Interesting - what did he say in particular?

I really couldn't see anything there other than garden centres, although it was nice being in something that vaguely approximates to countryside (I'm from a sparsely populated part of Devon originally, so I had to stiffle a snigger when the estate agent described it as remote!)

Nothing much in particular he was mostly comparing the place to Winchmore Hill and how he got much more property for his buck out 'in the sticks' biggrin. What he did say is that he didn't regret moving there in the slightest. He was happy to live there.

My reasoning was that if sacrificing the convenience of living in a town gave me a nice environment (and places like Bulls Cross are indeed nice from what I've seen...) plus a bit of community it might be worth doing, but all I could see were bungalows, garden centres and a very dodgy alleyway across to the train station that felt like you should see 'Crimewatch reconstruction' at the bottom of your field of view! biggrin

Like I said... I might not have seen the right bits, but that's the way it appeared.

Transport is a major thing as my girlfriend works in London (and I might be too if I play my cards right), plus if I'm going to tolerate the downsides of suburban living I want the ammenity value that goes with it.

What I'd really like is a house on Gentleman's Row with it's own garden and a double garage, 2 minutes awat from the night bus stop. Only half a million pounds or so seperate me from that!

Crews hill is a little 'out the loop' in terms of london suburbs.

Enfield is easy to get to at night from town with night buses all the time.

What sort of money you got and what you after etc. PM if you prefer.

Look into Grange Park. Just outside enfield town but very suburban, nice houses big garages

Yeah - we came to much the same conclusion about Crews Hill, now gone for one of the new places on the Ridgeway.

It's theoretically a detached house, but it's basically a flat above a garage. The entire ground floor is garage space, with the living area perched above - it's a very big garage!

It's a little bit further out of town (sadly we lose our local pubs), but it's minutes to the M25 and less than 10 minutes wlak to Gordon Hill station for getting into town.

It's the new development next to chase Farm. To be honest it's two garages (one of which belongs with the house - the other is presumably going to be rented out by the landlord). Neither is exactly small though, so I've got no excuse for not doing my own servicing now!

will keep an eye out for the Tiv.

Roads to visit - Dancers Hill, Coopers Lane

The Ridgeway is full of undulations so spirited driving is off the menu

Is that the development between the hospital and the Ambulance place? Opposite Hadley Road? I come out of there when I head for Crews Hill from Southgate if I go through Cockfosters.

Maybe I could phone you when I plan to pass by and you could wave to me out of your window?

It's nice to wave.

If using Dancers Hill, don't go over the roundabout to Trotters Bottom/Galley lane. Used to be a good addition to Dancers Hill, but now so full of potholes, you'd end up riping off something!

Coopers Lane is a great road if you get a clear run, as there isn't many overtake places. Lots of awesome switchbacks and stuff along there though and great test for suspension setup.

Yep, the Hawk Stratos' lives with me in Southgate. After my daughter and then my dog, she's the love of my life.

Unfortunately, CTD, as you have ducked out of the Enfield meet by claiming to be 'away' that day , you are not allowed to look at it. biggrin

Don't take it personally though, Freddie von Rost is also banned from looking at the Strat unless he manages to bring his unbelievably stunning looking C-Type to Enfield on Wednesday night. (7.30. King & Tinker Pub BTW).

This is the price you pay when you snub the North London PH massive!

You can come along any time you want to see it Giorgio. Just e-mail me. It would be a pleasure to take you out in the car!

I second that. It's like the stretch of road that time forgot. It used to be fun, especially that little leap over a culvert on the bend biggrin

It is a disgrace now frankly and a road to avoid if possible.

Galley Lane near Barnet? Went over that on Saturday - it's nothing like as bad as the road between Cuffley and Potters Bar (I think it's that one - go off the Ridgeway at Botany Bay, turn left at the resulting t-junction and left again after about 1/2 mile), that's virtually corrogated! Great fun in a hot hatch with a bit of suspension travel, but sports cars just keep grounding.

I did use it for damper tuning on my Eunos though.

Blib - wave away, that's exactly the spot.

(Should be good for mountain biking too with the woods just down the road biggrin)
