Mayor's transport strategy 2017
Discussion
Live in or near London?
Like driving cars?
Need to drive a car, for whatever reason?
Major sustained war on the motorist or just more of the same, if this has got your attention you can read more and have your say here. Consultation open until October 2nd.

Sadiq Khan's pollution policy is rather hypocritical. He gave permission to increase pollution through massive airport expansion. If he fails to stop the City Airport expansion we will get an extra 30,000 aircraft dumping pollutants across London from 6am each morning, each year. Perhaps he will be donating Respro masks to all joggers, cyclists and pedestrians in London ?

Its the road charging piece that gets me, being London-based I assume it will be on top of VED, and the highest charges at the times people actually need to drive - to get to work. Ta, mate. In addition to £20 per day to take your car off the drive inside the N/S circular (if he gets his way).
He's also failed to take into account that scientists have already said that the mining of Lithium is now causing environmental damage to waterways & therefore humans already. I'm guessing because this doesn't affect those people living in the city & Surrey that are making all the noise about air pollution only actually care about their environment rather than THE environment.
As you rightly point out air pollution comes from more than just cars, he's also ignoring a report that stated that the loss of 1/3 of carriageway space since the Mayors & TFL became the people that shaped London's roads is a big contribution to the traffic levels we have now.
One of the most damning parts was that they were saying speed humps are a major cause due to them being outside people's homes all of which is conducive to adding to air pollution not reducing it along with 20mph limits which again add to air pollution.
I've saved the best for last the reports say that if everyone in London get's in an EV London alone will have to get two new Nuclear Power stations just to charge those cars, hardly a great for the environment
Also he says he'll ban ICE cars by whenever but he won't ban hybrids which will have petrol/diesel engines.

Just show,s how much power has gone to the mayor,s head on sunday news on the TV he said that due to the volkswagon using software on all there car to cheat emissions that he wan,ts compensation of i think millions back from the manufactures eg=VW ,the funny thing is that VW have told him to go and F him self...........
"London’s streets should be for active travel and social interaction, but too often they are places for cars, not people. "
THAT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE ROADS
I think the current strategy is just to drive people out of their cars by making it so unappealing to drive in central London.
I live very centrally and only drive at weekends. The last 110 miles I've done (since I last filled up the car) have been at an average speed of <9mph. I've lived in this place for the past 5 years and I've never known it so bad. Accounting for parking permits, congestion charging etc, I pay a (relative) fortune for the 'privilege' of owning a car in London but it's rapidly becoming untenable. I suppose that's the intention.

why anyone sees the need to drive around central london i have no idea. use public transport, walk or get on a bike.
why do people NEED to use a car.
Most use a car because they need to otherwise they'd use a motorbike/public transport etc, just because what you do means you don't have to use a car others are in different lines of work & need to use a car.why anyone sees the need to drive around central london i have no idea. use public transport, walk or get on a bike.

We don't NEED speed humps as they actually promote air pollution as does the number of traffic lights, the 20mph speed limits, lack of runways at Heathrow/Gatwick & the fact that since we've had TFL in charge Carriageway space for private vehicles has been reduced by a 1/3 all of these factors NEED addressing but the Mayor/TFL won't do anything about those as it costs them money.
I have no problem with tackling air pollution but you should start at the top & work your way down by the way the MPH/Speed Humps/Traffic Lights have an adverse effect on both Petrol & Diesel cars.
