I need to book a decent hotel in central London as a treat for someone. The person in question likes the Ritz but I want somewhere different. I am wary of Tripadvisor reviews, so PH recommendation is the way to go (it is almost always good advice).

So, where to book, EXCLUDING:

The Ritz
Langham
1 Aldwych
Waldorf
Browns

I am wondering about the Savoy, Craridges or the Goring but other suggestions gratefully received.

Second the Dorchester
Or maybe the Jumeriah Carlton on Sloan street

The goring is first class but a bit pretentious I found

Or maybe try the Zetter in n1 as a bit left field choice get the penthouse room

Needs to be within striking distance of Bond St (but a cab ride is fine) budget up to £600 a night.

It's a taxi ride away, but The Landmark?

We stayed at the Waldorf a couple of weeks ago. Very pleasant in the newly refurbished rooms, but chaverama in the foyer - shellsuits and leopard print boob tubes in abundance.

Surprising, given the price of drinks in the bar.

Stayed in the Waldorf earlier in the year and it was very nice. The room had just been upgraded and was really nice. Great location too.

I've not stayed there (yet) but dined a few times at the Wellesley. It is a new Art Deco hotel between the Lanesborough and HR Owen and they have some good package deals on offer. You get the use of their RR Ghost too so that takes care of your ride over to Bond St.

This sounds interesting.

The Haymarket Hotel is one of the best (if not THE best) in London for quality. Not overly glitzy like the Dorch but just mega in every other way. Their sister hotel the Soho is also top notch.

Firmdale hotels is the group.
