Brixton - Gatwick for 8.45

Hello, a London novice here.
I have a job interview at the Gatwick Hilton at 8.45 on a Tuesday morning. The closes I can stay is in Brixton which is 1 hour 37 minutes away according to Google maps on public transport.

What I'm wanting to know is whether this is likely to be accurate or not and whether anyone can suggest a decent route.

TFL says it around an hour, never done the route myself tho.

I would go Brixton to Clapham junction, then train to Gatwick, give yourself a couple of hours if you don't know your way around.

Also that's rush hour so expect it to be very busy

I have done the Underground in rush hour so that doesn't bother me, I just don't really know my way around.
The interview is in the Hilton so if I'm really early I can just grab a cup of tea and pass the time.
