Does anyone live near Acton, Hither Green or Wembley?
Discussion
I’m looking at a possible relocation to Acton, Hither Green or Wembley due to change of job.
I will be doing some research on rental prices, but does anyone have first hand knowledge on any of these three locations regarding:
- Crime (any ‘no-go area’?)
- Social life
- Attitude towards car owners (e.g. do it require on-road parking permit etc)
- Rental prices
- etc
Many thanks in advance.

I used to live in Acton and now live on the Chiswick/Shepherds Bush borders. Anywhere south of the vale (within reason) is Okay, north of the vale is not great. General rule of thumb is, the closer you can get to Chiswick the better. Acton is cheap because it's... well... Acton, however the connections to both Central, Piccadilly and Overground lines make it well connected for the price.
As for permits, pretty much all of it is on-street permit only. They run at about £100 a year. If you have a particularly nice steed there are some secure lots by Acton town tube or by Shep Bush. I rent a secure underground space in the later and it's very good but rather pricey.
Have you thought about Ealing? Bit further out but it's on central lines and it's 6mins to Paddington on the train. It's also on proposed cross rail and a bit more car friendly.

I live about half a mile from Hither Green Station, as above there are some very nice areas, Lee conservation area and the north side of Lee High Rd towards Blackheath all worth a look too. Resident's parking scheme in Hither Green but not in Lee yet, parking not really a problem, going out wise you aren't far from Blackheath, which has good choice of bars and restaurants. Crime isn't too bad, been here over ten years, the house was broken into once but since improving security we haven't had any issues.

I'm guessing that if you're from outside London it will be a bit of a culture shock. As mentioned, the Chiswick end of Acton is much better but you will pay for it. Avoid anywhere on or near the South Acton Estate and north of the A40. There are a lot of parking restrictions and not a lot of garaging.
Have you thought about getting somewhere along the M40/M4 corridor?
I commute into Acton from Junction 4 of the M40, takes about 30 mins out of rush hour.

Thanks everyone! Very helpful.
Parking permit doesn't seem too bad; I'm paying £120 p.a. for mine now.
I used to live in London years ago so I know how ridiculous the rental prices are.
Anyway...... need to get the job first!
