Evening all, I have been told I will be working in "North London" next week. I don't know london at all so after a bit of advice please.

As I'm self employed I will be paying for digs myself so looking for cheap and cheerful, any suggestions on areas that are within an hour of North London would be appreciated.

I will be visiting numerous sites and due to the nature of my work I have no idea where I will be from one day to the next so need a central base.

How does the congestion charge work? My van got written off last week and I'm in a hire van, does this make any difference?

Sorry if these questions sound daft but I'm a daft northerner.

Cheers

Simon

I've used the Jury's Inn at Watford a couple of times, it's only 20 minutes or so into Euston. It's around 60 quid a night, dunno if that's in your price range?

Everywhere within 50 miles of the M25 will be around £70 a night, just pick a travel lodge somewhere like cheshunt. Havent bought congestion charge in ages, you can do it online or I think that you can still buy it in most petrol stations close to the zone, all of the sweetshops with paypont do it.

Congestion charge is bought by just giving them your numberplate and cash and they give you a little tear off receipt, like buying phone credit.

Most of North London will be outside the Congestion Charge zone. Check out the zone online, it starts on the North side at the Euston Road.
I'm sure I've heard recently on the radio that you can no longer pay the CC in newsagents, but can easily do it online if you need to. (the first page to come up when you Google Congestion Charge is not the official site!!! Use the TFL site.)
If you are going to be in North as in Greater London, this will be cheaper for accommodation and more likely get somewhere with parking facilities. You can still stay in these areas if you don't mind traffic in the mornings getting to where you have to be.

Cor, shows how long it is since I've had to pay CC. It must be doing something then because I avoid it like the plague, hadn't realised how long it had been since I was in there during the day.
