I'm going up to the GBBF @ Olympia tomorrow and was thinking of going up early and having a mooch about.

My train will get me to Kensington, but its not a tube line so I won't have a travel card.

Is it walkable or cheap enough to cab?

A little confused by this. The only train station I can think you are talking about is Kensington Olympia station. That is on short spur Tube line (District line). Oxford Street would be a long walk along High Street Kensington, then through the full width of Hyde Park - I would say around 45-50 mins walk at least. Cab would take a long time from 7am onwards - so not cheap (I would expect £12-20). Your best bet would be to walk North towards Shepherds Bush or Holland Park stations (15 mins walk) then take a central line tube ride (10-15mins) to Marble Arch (beginning of Oxford Street), Bond Street (next station on the nice bit of Oxford Street) , Oxford Circus (junction of Oxford Street and Regent Street) or Tottenham Court Road (far and 'grubby' end of Oxford Street).

If you are looking for the shops, you could stick to the Westfield Centre at Shepherds Bush station or High Street Kensington, both of which are within walking distance.

thanks JB.

Not really checked the rail route, but an online rail route planner suggested Tring to Kensington direct with no changes.

I may just stick around local, just fancied Denmark st as I was in town.

I see - for the Music equipment shops. For Denmark Street, you would want Tottenham Court Road. You are looking at around 1hr 15mins walk each way from Kensington Olympia. On the tube, walking to Shepherds Bush (in Zone 2) will take about 12mins and taking the tube to Tottenham Court Road would take 16 mins Denmark Street is just a couple of mins walk away.

Cost for a peak Zone 1-2 Travelcard is £8.80 or £7.30 if you start your tube travel after 9:30am.

I think the other route into London is Marylebone station, but if your main reason is to be at Olympia, I think the train you have chosen is best.

While around Olympia - Check out the Bristol showroom - Universal Music is across the road as well.

Turning your return overground ticket into a travelcard will probably add about £1, which would let you use all the tubes and buses.

If you've got an Android mobile phone, install the "Citymapper" app. Its free and compares all your transport options to get between point A and B in London in realtime or at given time of day.
