Bit of schoolboy error here, hoping that there are PHers with more experience than me who can help:

I've booked a weekend away for the OH's birthday, next weekend. Posh hotel near St. Paul's, nice restaurants, the lot. I was planning to drive down, park at the hotel, then taxi or tube around for the weekend before driving back.

I don't know what prompted me to check but the hotel doesn't have a car park frown it suggests on-street parking or the local NCP. I don't fancy my chances at finding a space on street, and I'm sure as hell not paying £44 a day for 3 days to use the NCP!! yikes

So, I guess some kind of park and ride is the solution, but where and how? We're coming down from the Midlands, so M40 then (presumably) M25.

If that's not a possibility, it will have to be a last minute train ticket - but I'd rather drive!

44 quid for 3 days in central London doesn't sound entirely unreasonable.

Train it. I don't know why anyone would want to take their car into that awful place.

From Saturday lunchtome onwards then on street parking is likely to be free and won't be difficult to find a space.

Make sure you pay the congestion charge if you need to.

I took my wife to London last week for a short appointment in Harley Street. Parked for just under one hour in an underground NCP on Marylebone Road and paid £8. Normally have to pay up to £32 depending on the duration of the stay; overnight (twenty four hours) is £40. Expensive but very convenient.
Train and tube is better for Central London if you are doing a three day stay and can get a deal on the train tickets, plus no worries about the car getting damaged in an NCP.

Drive to Warwick Parkway. Chiltern Line into Marylebone, dirt cheap fares at weekends, takes just over an hour on the train .
Often take Mrs CH and the daughters down at weekends, A£50 return for four and stay near St. Pauls too.

Train = no stresssmile

Plenty of free on street parking in decent residential areas if you park in Zone 4/5/6, and then you can tube into the centre. I typically use google streetview to check road signs for parking restrictions in advance.

Which end of the country are you driving from?

If from the northmMy suggestion would be to park on road parking in Golders green and get the tube/taxi into central London.

If from the south you can find roadside parking in East Dulwich.

Definitely the cheapest way as I drive to London frequently for work and that's how I get round it.

Defo go with Chiltern. Just looked up Birmingham Snow Hill to Marylebone, travelling down on Friday night after 6, returning Sunday after 3pm. Cheapest fare? £18 return (£6 down, £12 back) and there's a choice of trains at that price. Getting on at Warwick is the same price but there's a wider range of return trains at £12. Even if you factor in a taxi from Marylebone to St. Pauls & back you'll still be well ahead.

There is a parking area near aldgate east tube station, opposite the Ibis hotel. I used to use it a couple of years back at £10 per day, probably gone up a bit since then to about £12-£15 per day and it's outside the CC zone. Forgot to add that it's a NCP carpark that's not a million miles from St Paul's. Maybe a 20 min walk.

I'm in Beaconsfield. You're more than welcome to come and leave your car here (free) and train into town. 30 mins or so to Marylebone. Not too expensive. Can buy ticket in advance. PM me if interested.

Weekend? Restrictions are only between 8am and 12 on a Saturday, the rest of the time it is free. Drive down and find a bay or single yellow and just sort out parking for those 5 hours. I normally dump stuff over the south side of Blackfiars, Hatfield street is normally good but Im sure there must be something closer.

Cud u not try parking with say the Savoy hotel? We did when we stayed there and it was great, valet parking. Might not let people park there who aren't staying.

Can you park on the street near Stanmore? Have used it on the rare occurrence of visiting Wembley but paid to park at the station. Actually I think I have only been inside the m25 7 times in my life, 5 of those in and out for football matches so I may use this information once every 3 years at current rates.

Yes as you approach with it on the left, before you get to it is a roundabout, hang a right there, down there on the left is a new build estate. Leaves you a 10/15 walk to stanmore.
