Looking for the help of the PH london masses, as I'm at a bit of a loss.

Currently OH and I live in St Albans, I drive down to radlett for work (8 miles,25 mins), and she gets the overground into city thameslink and has a 5 min walk to work (45 mins).

Helpfully, her company has decided it's upping sticks to canary wharf....which is going to make her commute pretty much a nightmare.

She is set for us to move, but I don't really want to be more than 15 miles from radlett due to fuel cost (I earn considerably less than her). She wants to be under an hour from place X to canary wharf.

Needs to be somewhere we can leave cars overnight without fear of them on cinderblocks in the morning, and somewhere relatively safe and not too grim.

Increased car insurance costs would also be a factor for me (postcodes etc).

Any ideas? cheers

As you probably know C.Wharf is a nightmare to get to unless you live in the east end. What about looking for something near the northern end of the Jubilee line?

I can't help much but I work at North Greenwich. Have fun coming this way during the Olympics! P.S. The Jubilee Line was shagged today.

You're probably in the best compromise place for getting to those two. Personally I'd take my Brompton on the train, it's only about 4 miles from Farringdon or City Thameslink so train plus a (very) gentle cycle should get you there in under an hour, without arriving all sweaty. Else she could get a scooter or motorbike and start practising her filtering.

Unless you go for something on the Jubilee line as said, going in to any of the overground stations or other underground lines means a couple of changes to get there and that eats up time. Crossrail will open up some better routes, but that's another 6+ years off.

Most of the people I know who work in Canary Wharf either cycle or bike it in, or else live nearby.

As mentioned, Canary Wharf is always a bit of a nightmare to get to unless you want to live riht on top of it, and that will not be good a for your car insurance!

Bank DLR station is only a 5-10 minute walk from City Thameslink. Bank-Canary Wharf is 15 minutes, so may just about fit in under an hour.

The costs of moving will be high and it would be very hard to get somewhere that is both as nice as St Albans AND a much shorter commute to Canary Wharfwhilst still being close to Radlett.

The only place I can think of is Stanmore - 45 minutes to Canary Wharf directly on the Jubilee line and only about 6-7 miles from Radlett.

Sorry....but surely she can just get the Thameslink to either London Bridge or West Hampstead and jump on the Jubilee Line? Should be about an hour.

It's not that difficult!

It would work out about an hour and 45 minutes door to door if we stayed where we are...and she regularly works 12 hour days, so wants to keep the commute down.

But, happily, just found out her company has put the move off for 2 years and instead decided to revamp the current offices...problem solved for us smile
