I've just accepted a contract role in Canary Wharf, and as someone from Belfast who has never spent much time in London, I'm needing some recommendations for accomodation.

Typically I'll be there 3-4 nights per week then heading home, perhaps the occasional weekender. Not a big fan of public transport, so something close by if possible. Main requirements are a boozer nearby (preferably one where I won't get stabbed) and a gym.

Cost isn't really a concern, although don't want to p1ss away too much money. Will perhaps have a look at buying something after the olympics. No parking required.

Any thoughts? TIA
BTW, £4.30 for DLR Zone 1. WTF!

Limehouse / Narrow St.
10 min walk to CW
2 good pubs within 2 mins
Good Indian and italian restaurant 2 mins
5 min walk to dlr which will get you to the city in 5 mins and west end access in a further 5/10
On the river

Try Hurford Salvi Carr, Rubicon, Elizabeth Pryce as local agents.
Hth !

If you want to rent a place week nights only - I used to let my room that way to an IT contractor chap from Leeds, worked well. there are a couple of other similar sites, sparerooms is one, google it.

Limehouse is a good idea, agents sound ok. Avoid Foxtons at all costs, absolute bunch of *****.

You might also consider Bow/Mile end E3, easy DLR/bus to Canary Wharf.

The thing with London, especially East London, is how dodgy or not it is can change rapidly within a street or two. You need to get to know the area you want to be a little. Pretty much all of Limehouse is ok, but the isle of dogs is very mixed. In E3, my view north of mile end road is fine, south of mile end road not, etc. Any specific locations you want a view on happy to help.

Thanks. I saw reference to this previously. Will have a look when I'm over in a week or two. Staying in a hotel for first couple of weeks, will see how things pan out from there.

Beers anyone??

Not as good as it used to be. Pubs are now owned by Gordon Ramsay (full of tossers), Sir Ian McKellern (full of out of work actors and tourists), and the other pub (Bootys) where I used to drink along with all the other locals has just shut.

Also lots of scumbags hanging around these days, drugs and antisocial behaviour since the Cahhhhhhhhhhncil started putting skiprats in private accomodation.

I'm leaving in three months.

Funny you say that, couldn't believe the security in and around Canary Wharf. Reminds me of Belfast in the early 80's - bags getting x rayed etc!

This was our view when we bought somewhere.

We live in Clapham North, and Canary wharf would be about 40mins on the Tube, with one change.

Tredegar square houses sell for £1.5m on average, there are some decent bits of Bow. The area north of mile end road, east of Grove road south of victoria park is pretty decent IMHO.

Canary Wharf is boring agreed, but Clapham is not exactly central, 40 mins on the tube with one change, if the Northern Line works reliably (not often) and not in rush hour - add 20 mins wait to get on a train pushing and shoving anytime between 7-9am, no thanks.

Live central - definitely. The least imaginative places to live in London are 1. Islington 2. Clapham 3. Earls Court. If you want to live/drink with couples just moved in from the home counties who both work at UBS/AN Other Bank then go ahead.
