Well being pretty Central in London I have to venture the best part of 20 miles to find some road to allow me to open up the GTR to some where near its true potential.....Anyone know of any good routes or drives for a late night drive? Dont mind it its N/W/S/E London or beyond.....

Many thanks!

I clicked on this site with interest but have to say I was underwhelmed with the Surrey section. Richmond to Hindhead looked good but just involved getting on A3 at Wandsworth and staying on it until Hindhead? Thats just the most direct route and very, very boring?
The next one, Coulsdon, looked similarly uninspiring so I gave up, sorry.
There have been plenty of threads on here with more interesting roads that at the very least this site should borrow some ideas from because it definitely has potential....

If you want to head north and you don't mind venturing a bit further afield: Head to Potters Bar, pick up the B158 towards Hertford, but just before you get to the town, cut across to the B1000 heading west towards Welwyn, then get on the B656 going north through Codicote to Hitchin, from there - if you want to go further - take the B655 out to Barton le Clay, then go north up the A6 before heading east on the A507.

Bear with me for the first few (rather dull) miles of the A507 and you'll discover a brilliant driving road once it narrows down past Baldock. Grin all the way to Buntingford and then pick up the A10 to head back into London. (I wouldn't personally condone go really quickly in a straight line, but if you're so inclined there are no speed cameras heading back until you get to the outskirts of Waltham Cross.)

Or you could have a chat with a PHer who goes by the name of Plenty and join some like minded individuals on the Herts run next Sunday (13th): http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Hey Chris,

Just doing a search on good driving routes from North London and this one popped up. Just wondering if the first part of the drive you mention is any good as you only really bigged up the last bit? i.e.

Head to Potters Bar, pick up the B158 towards Hertford, but just before you get to the town, cut across to the B1000 heading west towards Welwyn, then get on the B656 going north through Codicote to Hitchin, from there - if you want to go further - take the B655 out to Barton le Clay, then go north up the A6 before heading east on the A507.

Many thanks
Steve

Depends what you're comparing it to, really. I always think of the B158 as the first decent road you get to heading north from this part of London. As a general rule, they get better the further out you go, but for a road practically within sight of the M25 I think the '158 is pretty good. A couple of overtaking stretches, a nice mix of bends and not ridiculously busy by local standards....

I use it as a fun start to a circular route. The other roads are better overall (particularly that last bit of the A507) but the B158 is a more entertaining way of getting to them than the A1.
