I'm planning to drive to London for the first time from Up'North and am realising parking is going to be a nightmare. As there's few proper car parks around where I'll be visiting (Stoke Newington and Bethnal green), I was wondering about just parking in Residents parking only zones and gamble on getting a PCN. I shouldn't be more than a few hours in each street.

Does anyone know if I will just get a PCN rather than being clamped / towed? Also, if the street is quiet, is there still a big risk of wardens coming by?

In Bethnal Green you could get all of your options to be honest, plus stolen obviously.

It will probably get stolen before a PCN to be honest! Park in a car park and save yourself the aggro of worrying about a clamp.

Not sure about other boroughs but round here (Wandsworth) they are like a great Zombie Army and as soon as the restrictions kick in they are everywhere. On foot and mopeds, they are unstoppable....

When are you visiting?

Weekends a lot of the roads around Stoke N at least are resident permit free.

The car will surely only be stolen if someone pulls out a knife and asks me for the keys, which is hopefully unlikely.

Visiting Fri-Sat. Will give illegal parking a miss and spend time hunting down pay and display streets, or long walks to an NCP.

Your replies have also made me start to reconsider the train down instead.

Do your mates not have any spare visitor permits for you?

As has been said, lots of London streets outside the centre are free on Saturdays anyway, so you're only looking at needing to pay or have a permit up to 6.30pm on Friday.

Google maps street view is great for spotting zones you can use....

Somewhere on my computer I've got a great image which I took of a Camden Parking warden giving a ticket to a London Borough of Camden truck which was putting up a "Controled Zone" parking sign!
