my new 2000 lotus esprit

i just bought a 2000 lotus esprit, black with just 13000 miles, it seems to run very well, but i just noticed the engine light just came on, not flashing just on, it seemed to be after i filled up the washer fluid resevoir, can it be shut off, and also does this car have two gas fill spots, and if so i dont see a button to open the passenger side tank.

Welcome to Esprit ownership. First, the 2000 only has one filler cap, so that's fine. Second, filling up the washer tank was coincidence only... not connected to the check engine light.
If the check engine flashes, you have a serious problem, if it's on steady you had a single failure. If the failure does not repeat itself the light will turn off after a few cycles.
In most cases you will find the brand of gasoline used can play games with the ECM and you'll get check engine lights. In short, if you use Super Shell gas, I can almost guarentee you will get check engine lights. I suggest you use Chevron Supreme as I've never had a check engine with Chevron.
As for turning the light off, the Esprit V8 is OBD-II compatible so using a generic Scantool (like Ease, Tech-1, etc.) will allow you to see the error code and freeze frame data and clear it. when you get check engine lights from bad fuel it's always a P00171 which translates to system lean bank 1.
Hope this helps.... btw - check with the last dealer who serviced the car and ensure that your car had a cambelt service recently. Also note that LCU covers cambelt services for 8 years or 100K miles but you have to arrange this prior to the visit. Have the dealer contact Dave Simkin for authorization.

I've had some experience with this with my 2003. If it is a steady light, and the failure does not repeat itself, after 3 times starting the car, the light will disappear. There are a few things that can cause this:
(1) filling your gas tank while the engine is on.
(2) a huge rainstorm that can cause water condensation to form on the sensor, or perhaps it is just bad gas as Kevin mentioned.
Solution to (1) is simply wait until the 3 time you start it to see it disappear. The second (2) requires the use of "Sta-bil" gas additive which cleared the problem right up for me. Sta-bil is used to preserve the integrity of your gas during storage (prevents gum and varnishes from forming) since gasoline beleive it or not starts to break down after 90 days.
