Does anyone know of the part number for the actual distributor (not the cap).

Also anyone know much about the distributor? Does it have points? Other than the cap and rotor arm are there any other parts that can be replaced or just the entire unit. How way it is to change the distributor?

Sorry for all the questions trying to get the car fixed in time to go home on Friday.

Distributor is easy to replace, one bolt in the base retains
It. No points. There is an amplifier module on the side which
Can fail but again is easy to change.
What's wrong with yours ?

They are often on ebay

Well I haven't proves it for sure yet but looks like there's an earth fault. I have changed the cap and rotor arm since I got the car but will check these again.

Can you change just the amp unit or is it all one thing?

You can change just the amp thing.

I'll dig out a source of cheap new ones and get back to you.

What are the symptoms as even a cheap one is not cheap

Can anyone tell me what the amplifier is wired to as I can't see it on the wirin diagrams?

You don't change the distributor to fix electrical faults. The dizzy is a mechanical component that just provides a whirling shaft at the right speed and phase relative to the engine. If you have an electrical fault it could be an HT component, or the coil, ignition amplifier or electronic pickup (getting less likely as you go down the list). None of these would require a new dizzy. Unless you know how to retime the ignition from scratch I suggest you don't so much as slacken the fizzy mounting bolt because if you don't know what you're doing you'll really struggle to get the timing right afterwards.

Well I have no idea what your "symptoms" are or how you came to "diagnose" its the dizzy but more than happy to send it to you to try. Our carriers (TNT probably) doesn't pick up till PM so just let me know through here (can't get personnel emails at work)if you DON'T want or need it by lunch time.

Either way I hope you get it sorted and on your way back home before too long !

Thanks for everyone's help. Especially mike or sending me his spare distributor. This has fixed my problem and after have a professional chel my ignition timing I am now able to make the journey home to London tomorrow.

A couple of notes of interest:

1. I think it was only my ignition module/amp that was fualty but you have to take out the whole distributor to change it so I changed the whole thing anyway.
2. The company that set up my ignition timing did it on a rolling road and I therefore got a dyne printout for my car. This was encouraging as my 22yr old 50k miles S2 measured 152.2bhp.
