After 5 years of hitting the exhaust, it`s time to have a good look. Not as bad as I`d expected. These stainless exhausts seem to hold up quite well.

Ahhh, the cause of that noise is revealed hehe

I've been grovelling around under my S recently and the damage to my exhaust seems to be on the down pipes (more oval than circular cross section now!) and the bend upwards just before the end of the pipes. Looks like yours is on the back box...would call it a 'silencer' but thats a bit of a misnomer on your car! earsbiggrin

Hello Tom, I`ve done a lot of grovelling under mine too, had to take the sump off, modded the cross member that was in the way wink. Heads skimmed and exhaust ports are now larger and polished, it sounds evil with a real deep thumping on tickover. I`ve got a list of things to do, but then there`s always a list, I`m itching for the first post rebuild run cloud9

Wow you've been busy!

I was planning a partial lift this winter but ran out of time. I managed to clean up and paint the battery tray, swirl pot and ARB, replace the clutch cylinders, and put a new steering bulkhead bearing in.

Just gotta put my new silicone hoses on and I can start her up! I can't wait to go out for a spin in the sun driving

So failing any caliper problems(hehe) I might get to see your S at S Club this year!

It`s going to need a good checking tommorow, it failed to start today. I`m going to begin with the timing and go from there.

Talking of Mr Cleese..

When I first got the Trevor I had some issues with the starter refusing to do its job. I got round this by carrying a large steel bar in the car which I could 'persuade' the starter motor with before turning the key.

I managed to stall one day just as i pulled out of my road furious, blocking a busy traffic light controlled cross junction in the process. Just as I feared the damn starter decided to play up so I had to stick my foot out the car and push myself back into my road. That would have been fine had a car not wanted to turn into my road which i was now blocking banghead

Seriously embarrassed now I leapt out the car with about 30 people watching, popped the bonnet, grabbed my 'persuader', repeatedly smacked my starter, closed the bonnet, jumped in the car, started it (censored thing!) and drove off as fast as i could! paperbag

All through that i was saying similar things to Basil Fawlty, although it was definitely the post water shed version!!
