How do I check the condition of my gearbox?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but it's got me scratching my head. The gearbox is not attached to the car at the moment, and it won't be re-attached anytime soon, so how do I find out what condition it's in? If I need to get it rebuilt (or if I need to scrap it and find another one) I'd like to know now so that I can make some plans!

Take top off and look inside! was the oil all full of foating metalic parts. If it is and they brass in colour it means the syncro is worn. Does it feel notchy, But why not just take it to a gearbox specialist and get it checked over. well worth the £50 for a proper inspection in case you are worried
