I did look at this but decided to go 24v cosworth which a much simpler conversion IMHO. Engines are cheeper to pick up and bolt straight in. The 3.0 jag durtech is prob the one to go for. It's a light engine but couldn't think of any other benefit over the cossie lump once it's got Bob cams that should make 230bhp or so.

Interested if you do it though..

Just check out the width of any multivalve V6 (apart from the cossie as we know that fits).
The heads are usually very large (wide) to accomodate the cams etc

Being a bit "old school" I've always thought the 2 litre Pinto engine would make an interesting conversion ?

Really?!?! The Pinto is a bit of an anchor.

I'd stick with the Cosworth lump.

When the duratec engines came out i think ford stopped using their once common bellhousing pattern (were the duratec range engines a mazda design? my memory fails me on that point). Anyway that means getting it into a RWD config might be challenging. The Jag route is an option, and I think Morgan ran a duratec version so you might want to investigate their transmission and RWD sump arrangements.

Just found this previous thread which might help

Jags are fed or 4wd iirc I think the mt75 will perhaps not sure which version though. Morgan do have a red box could be expensive though.

the Jag S Type has the only RWD box to Duratech in Jags line up. has 1:1 top gear unlike most fords which have overdrive top, so you will need a taller diff ratio than current 3.62 or itll revs its nuts off and redline at 90mph lol. Jag S type diff is 3.07 BTW

If you were thinking of a 4 pot is it possible that it would be too tall at the front and foul the bonnet?

V8S bonnet may help with clearance?

I looked up the height for Duratec 2.0 & 2.3 4 cylinder, which can easily make 200bhp, if the figures i got off the net are right the duratec is 2cm less in height than the cologne , but i would want to double check that. I think the four pot would be very light weight & with right exhaust set up sounds very good, plenty clips on u tube.

£150 gets you a bellhousing to mate the four cylinder duratec to the ford type 9 gearbox in the Tvr S

TVR's where all four pot to start with, if the four pot Duratec offering 200bhp at 80kg had been available for the S 20-25 years ago it would have been under the bonnet!
keepin it light makes it eaier to avoid beefing up chassis, suspension, brakes blah blah

How much to tune to 200 bhp? What about the torque?

The only 4 pot I would put in also says cosworth on it.

I personally wouldn't sacrifice sound for less weight. I'd just buy a Lotus smile

How much do V6 Duretecs weigh?

Sound would be the main issue with a swap engine, but with the right exhaust the duratec 4 pot can sound good imo,

You can get a Cosworth version & can be tuned up to 250bhp & more, the original cossie put out 200bhp but that was with a turbo, duratec is naturally aspirated and puts out the same at a lot lighter weight, now Fords main 'world' engine so absolutely loads of spares info the lot

It is an all aluminium engine, so is very lightweight (about the same as a k-series) approx 80kg bare. It is also very tunable with 200bhp available without even opening up the engine, all it needs is a good exhaust and a set of throttle bodies.

If you do it diy supposedly its relatively cheap, you really just need throttle bodies which can be had off a motorbike from fleabay or such like, & a decent exhaust, is all well documented online as its the kit cars engine of choice at the moment, lot of forums and pictures/diaies of complete builds engine swaps, also engine of choice for retro ford people.

here is a link, but there are loads of others: http://gtslocost.locostsites.co.uk/page6.html

you are right about the sound i would hate to lose the character of the car, just toying with the duratec idea, jury is still out ;-)

cracking little movie you made with your S Lukas, e-mailed it to a pal today, pity the roads around Edinburgh are to gritty to go for a run as that clip gets me in the mood!
