hi all

how difficult is it to change the gearbox oil "access" in my S3 ? and how long would it take to do ?
i may do this myself or is it going to be easier to get my garage to deal with it

i know there is no drain plug so it has to be sucked out , what the best way to do this

my 2nd gear is a bit sticky from cold and gets better when the car is warm , i've heard this is a common issue with the type 9 box
and to improve this the use of a semi synthetic oil is best, whats the preferred oil spec for this ? is it mtf 94

cheers keith

Salut.

the Question for the best Oil is not easy.
I spoke with Ford Specialist and after 1 Hour it was not easier.
In my N9 is a red Oil, it is normaly used and is a Hydraulik Oil.
You can use SAE80, but then you'll have to work if its cold.
For driving more than 2 hours with full throttel, the SAE80 should
be better then the red one. But for normal use, the red should be better.

Hi Keith.
If its of any help, I used MTF94 when I had my gearbox out last summer so draining was not an issue. Looked at lots of threads, all giving different advise so I guess the choice is yours. I have used MTF94 on several different boxes and it has given good results to date.
The old motor took us around Europe last year with no issues and the clutch/gearbox selection was very good.
Cheers, Stew.

The guys at www.bghgeartech.co.uk (who know a thing or two about type 9 gearbox's) reccomended I use Comma 75/90 semi synthetic.

Apparently fully synthetic is "too good" for these old box's and can stop the synchro rings gripping and therefore doing their job ?

I used the 75/90 semi-synthetic too (Millers) and dont have any issue with gearchages hot or cold.

to remove the oil I made a kind of syringe with a bicycle pump, but you can get these at machine mart etc... you gain access via the filler plug on the nearside of the gearbox IIRC and it takes ages, spit the extracted oil into a container so you can see how much oil you have removed. get the car level then fill the box up with new oil until it runs out of the filler hole (or is it just below and you need to make a dipstick with some wire? - or was that the diff ? check the bible for that bit eh wink )

good luck

phillpot "mike"

thanks for the contact details of geartech i'll give them a call re the best oil ?
i spoke with opie oils todays and discussed semi syn or fully syn and there view was go with the fully synthetic its far better than a older type oil

they recommended the redline mt90 75/90 its not cheap but makes for much easier gear shifts when cold which is my problem
so i'm tempted to go with that as it has very good reviews and a modern oil

but i am concerned with the unknown on the type 9 box with fully synthetic oil "synchro rings not gripping" as you said
i'll call them tomorrow and see what they say

Sticks.

Will changing the oil make much difference to this? Mine was like it @ 7k miles iirc and so were Sierras at the time. Depends how bad yours is I guess.

sticks

the haynes manual mentions possible problems with the type 9 box for the sierra notchy 2nd gear
and they advice changing to a semi synthetic which should make thing better
this info is now 20 years old and fully synthetic is now the much better oil , but is it better for a 20 year old gearbox ?

It was a long time ago I had mine and just thought it 'normal'. People will easily know more about which oil than me, but I remember it was a pain to do, so hope it works.

As for draining the oil, I found that if you just slacken the six big bolts holding the tailshaft housing to the main gearbox casting all the oil runs out a treat, re-tighten and no harm done (or leaks).

sit back and wait for..... yikes you can't do that !!!!!

thanks all for your help with this one

looks like after speaking with 2 gearbox reconditioners semi synthetic is the way to go
the info that i got was that it is very important to get a 75w 90 gl-4 spec NOT GL-5 this is for the bronze synchros in the box
from wearing out, the gl-5 can be very corrosive over time

i'm getting the comma 75w 90 gl-4 this turns out to be the cheapest gear oil but it comes with good recommendation
millers also is a good oil for the type 9 box

cheers keith

I'm pretty sure thats the same advice I got four years ago which led me to use Millers semi 75/90 and as I say I have had no problems with gearchanges...

K wink

I use Redline MT90 75-90 gl-4 fully synthetic - it seemed to do the job. Put in the best you can afford - you'll probably only do it once.

I used one of these

to suck the old oil out, and I think not much was left behind. It was also very useful for putting the fresh oil back in, as it seems not to come in squeezy bottles with long spouts anymore.

Have fun,
Graham
