Fuel Filler Caps

Anyone have a solution to rechroming or replacing the fuel filler cap ?

Spoke to TVR Car Parts but they are very expensive at about £115 + VAT. They also commented that the metal underneath the chrome plating is such poor quality that it will always pit, and is not ideal to rechrome one plated once.

Wondered whether anyone had found a better solution?

there were some stainless ones being made recently but they were not a cheap option...

I suggest that if you dont want to spend a lot of money and you are not in a hurry then ebay could be your friend... search for "Scimitar cap" and see what comes up... (the one thats listed at the minute is not the same) I think the SE5 and SE6 ones are the same as the "S" but may have suffered the same corrosion problems. make sure you get some good pictures.

I got one for a fiver (just the flap of lid itself) and was chatting with a Scimitar owner about it and he claimed he had half a dozen new ones in a box in his barn !!! so far he has not un-earthed them

I'll take a look on ebay and perhaps save a search. If the 'barn find' of new caps comes off, I'd be interested !

Norman (Gerald TVR) did the leg work and a batch was made up, that were then sold through TVR car parts.

The old ones are not considered fit for replating.

I believe they are only fitted to the Sunbeam Rapier fastback coupe, so tread carefully if you go that route.

I agree you do need to tread carefully and ensure you are buying the right one but am confident that some GTE's had the same fuel cap... Its not a great picture but I think this car listed on ebay as 290497794214 has the type of cap we also have...
As I said, mine was listed as Scimitar GTE and its the right one...

I was looking into having some new petrol filler caps made in Stainless Steel with Mick Gaughran of the Reliant Scimitar/Middlebridge community. Our caps are identical to those on the GTE SE5a and SE6, also the Sunbeam Rapier fastback coupe. I cant be sure BUT I think TVR were the source for Sunbeam/Reliant, certainly all the new/old petrol caps came from a TVR source.

I spoke to Mick two(?) years ago and we were attempting to get new caps made in stainless steel either in India or China. This proved to be extremly difficult and a supply of new but unmachined caps (plus a very few bases) were found by TVR Car Parts. I was able with my local contacts to have the caps/bases machined, polished, and plated. This work was, in the main funded by TVR Car Parts.

Ah, hi Norman, it sounds like TVR car parts still have your parts for sale then as the prices quoted are the same (£55 top, £55 bottom and there was a pin quoted aswell for a few pounds.

So my only remaining question is, how difficult would it be to fit these ?
