Front inner wing has come off...

I opened the bonnet today after a spirited drive to find the drivers side inner wing sitting down rather than lifting with the bonnet.
It was bolted to a piece of wood (!?) which hangs from the bonnet. I did not think the car had any wood used for anything other than cosmetic purposes.
My first thought is to use fibre glass to rebuild the wood area - actually replacing the wood with fibre glass but using the wood as a template.
Anyone had a similar experience?
